controversial movie/book/non-metal music opinions thread

I cant understand the bashing of "the village". Great scenery and shooting, awesome atmosphere, the soundtrack is ace and goes very well with the movie, the twist isnt earthshaking but its definately in the vein of the whole feeling in the movie etc.

jim carrey is solid in 'eternal sunshine' which is pretty clearly the best film he's taken part in. even that one's a bit overrated though, gets docked a few points for the stupid sideplot. and 'liar liar' is a guilty pleasure for me haha.

I actually fin "eternal sunshine" to be a great idea that didnt work at all the way they excecuted it. Otherwise the idea is something I really like. I think "the buttefly effect" and "donnie darko" are both alot better.

One Jim Carrey movie (the only?) I really liked was The Truman Show.

It can't bring forth the feeling of riding on the highway in the sunset with a cig in your mouth like a cool blues song can, by that i'm not slagging the entire thing off of course, but to me there's superior music. How many of you actually listen to classical music? It's something many like to say to seem sofisticated but very few actually do.

wow. brilliant. so because a genre of music can't touch on every conceivable emotion it must be emotionally narrow and overrated. WTF.

Time travel is pretty damn interesting but... man, it had Ashton Kutcher in it! The only thing I like that he's ever done is That 70's Show.

True but I think he did a good job. I was very sceptical about it at first but I wasnt annoyed with him at all. Had he not been in That 70's show I dont think people would have seen him as bad (Maybe not great either though).

But hey Im pretty flexible when it comes to movie taste. I enjoy Cloverfield

They missed a perfect opportunity to scare some people by not looking down with the camera when they were on top of the skyscraper. I didn't really enjoy the movie overall.

Also, have you seen The Descent? I'm not a fan of the horror genre like you, but I actually enjoyed that movie.

I havent. Might check it out because you recomended it.

LOTR movies have a lot to admire and i'm not very tolerant of people who outright slate them. the first film particularly grabbed the tone, fitting really 'cause the first book was best as well. obviously it's overwrought as fuck especially later on, all the gooey slow mo shots of people's faces are just BAD cinema, but as far as i'm concerned he gets away with it.
They are really good and some of the most epic movies ever made, but I must admit that everytime I watch them I get more annoyed by how much really are changed from the books (I'm a Tolkien geek so I care :p), not just totally obvious stuff but also the feeling of some of the characters and their attitude to various things.

The Descent was a good one

anyway. I think Jane Austen, the Brontes and most other writers during the romantic period are shit.

*waiting for Dodens*

One thing that was great about the LOTR movies was the casting, especially Frodo and Sam look extremely similar to how i imagined them when i read the books. A thing that struck me when i saw the last movie was that i thought it would had been a better ending if Frodo and Sam died when mount doom erupts and they lie outside on the cliff, i never thought about that when i read the books.

'the descent' is good yeah. i think people who "don't like horror" (and aren't just pussies) tend to be the kind of people who think in terms of genre archetypes way too much. there's a whole load of depth and artistry in the best horror and lots of common ground with great works in other genres, you get a lot of intellectual types rejecting horror in the same way literary critics ignore fantasy, and like usual it's without basis.

I don't think that's what he meant. I think he was saying (and I tend to agree) that classical music does not evoke the same kind of emotions that most people want from music. Correct me if I'm wrong mattson.

that and 28 days later are the only good 'serious' horror movies that i've heard of in recent years
