I've only been here for 3 years but okay? Doesn't really answer or address my complaint. There's difference between asking for restraint and enforcing restraints.

all bullshit aside, im happy that we have an administrator like Deron .... who never rides a high horse and actually talks to us as equals. Very respectable. I'm pretty sure most of us would not stay or be here if this place was run like every other neutered/PC forum.

I don't think he told anyone here not to use the word faggot, he just basically asked for us to tone it down a little.

Asking is fine but from what I recall, tons of comments have been deleted, a thread has been locked and people have been put on warning because certain people reported others for using it I guess.

That said I don't have a problem with the forum right now, my complaint was based on a future prediction via trends of conduct.

Hope not. Things need to stop being so dictated by who is the most offended and report-happy.

trust me, we weed out the weak. Those people will never survive here in the long run.

One of my main problems with that logic is, I think people forget that this is a site for many, not for a few. While there is a clique/fam vibe here and a bunch of regulars, there still has to be consideration for new users. BUT - I ALL the time am having to defend GMD to new users in private when they message me about the "style" here. I defend the GMD culture - to a degree.

@CASSETTEISGOD I don't know if you saw that thread before I edited 5-8 (maybe more) pages worth out. 5-8 pages of off topic, fighting, overuse of the word "fag" in its various forms, etc. It was unnecessary - and it passed the threshold of tolerance for a lot of people that day - new AND old. I don't just edit/appear out of nowhere. I respond when things boil over and I use a very "low bar" judgement on when to edit/lock or warn/ban folks.

I will unlock the thread, but I expect everyone to self moderate, and to report when necessary vs. lashing out and then shitting up threads. Over the course of the last year, LOTS of regulars report/discuss with me that it has become old - this is not a place to fight because you don't agree with someone's opinion because it differs to much from yours. I get that people will give each other shit about it, that's completely fine. But when that turns into infighting, derailing, pages of bickering - even my tolerance for that is done. Nothing - NOTHING - is accomplished or beneficial with that stuff.

This makes no sense to me, it's for the many not the few should imply that nobody gets censored. You're simply redefining "the many" to mean "the few" users who get offended and report other users without realising it.

I understand that this isn't about freedom of speech but a parallel can be drawn between censoring speech that offends people vs. letting people say whatever they like. Hence speech for the many (aka the all) vs the few who wish to censor others.

Might as well do what has been done with the 'n-word' and just format it so that all offensive words are auto-swapped with something harmless.

BUT - I ALL the time am having to defend GMD to new users in private when they message me about the "style" here. I defend the GMD culture - to a degree.

You don't even need to defend the specific GMD culture, just defend the principle of letting the users be free as long as they don't break any laws or share pornographic/graphic violence material I don't see what the problem is.

I mean, plenty of people say things I don't like or even downright hate sometimes but I've never once felt entitled to have mod action levied against them or to have their comments deleted, I don't get how anybody could be that much of an entitled twat.

Maybe self-restraint should be recommended to all these offended reporters?

I think regardless of where people land on this, most if not all of us know that the thread in question was specifically created for shitting up with arguments and perhaps less than amiable debating. I can see cleaning threads up when a thread has a specific topic being completely ignored but the Controversial Opinions Thread is the GMD dumpster fire.

One of the few GMD shitfests/controversies I had little involvement in shockingly. I've actually been pretty good lately (not great) but this slippery slope shit with certain words becoming off limits leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I like this place so I care if it becomes too censorious, especially since most of us are adults and being told what words we can or can't use is a bit ridiculous.

And again, as I said after the last wave of offended people reporting stuff and having pages of stuff deleted and people being put on notice: why aren't these people using the 'ignore' function if what they're seeing is so bad that they feel the need to report?

Just seems like things are being decided by the most offended users. Hell, the users private messaging the offenders and asking them why they say what they say and to perhaps ease up a bit would be a much better solution than this daycare center method.

Anyways, it's your site Deron so take this with a grain of salt of course.

Personally, I think you're making more of things than need be.

I'll only address one thing you said because I think you have it backwards. This is partially hypothetical.

When I say, it exists for many and not just a few - if in the end 65-80% of the users dislike that a certain word(s) have gotten to the point of being overused or used in a context that becomes more demeaning that anything - then I'm not going to let the minority of users set rules for the whole. If (again, as example) 5 users constantly cause trouble out of 30, 50, 500 users on a site - then things will be handled to keep the community as a whole intact and happy. And really to keep the forum a place as it was intended - for people to come and discuss metal and related subjects.

That all said, I may simply say "Hey put user X on ignore, problem solved." - and that's my recommendation 90% of the time. If for example the N word is used way too much, I may deploy a substitute word and issue a tern warning - because sometimes freedom of speech (such as in that case) has no place here on this site.

In the end, I would hope that most here vouch for me, I am pretty damn lenient to the community as a whole, and I certainly do not make rules/judgement on the community based on only a handful of new users - at all. I've lost way more users than I've kept in that regard.

I don't share who reports what. And when it comes a point that a LOT of long time regulars bring up concerns/reports - the community (and myself) should take note.

That's all I'll say on all this.

Eh fair enough.

Yes you are lenient and I have no personal issues with you at all, but what I've expressed here still stands for me and while it may seem like I am making more out of this than I need to, I don't exactly have a mechanism like a report to complain about what I see as a creeping censoriousness, hence my sprawling comments here.

Anyway I'll never pretend to even a little bit understand constantly offended people. They're words, grow a fucking spine (at whoever is complaining so often that this whole thing is even happening).
