controversial movie/book/non-metal music opinions thread

Yeah I'll take the Kinks, the Stones, Simon and Garfunkel, the Animals, the Moody Blues, the Doors, Chuck Berry, Derek and the Dominoes etc all ahead of the Beatles.

btw it could be argued that the Kinks' 'You Really Got Me' was the first heavy metal song ever written. It was way ahead of its time.

Really? I just don't relate at all, especially not The Doors. I will agree that The Kinks (especially) and Simon and Garfunkel were great bands and the Stones were great here and there, but the music of The Beatles (from Rubber Soul onwards tbh) always spoke to me more somehow.

As for The Beatles being considered juvenile... if you're referring specifically to Sgt. Peppers, I still disagree. Sure a lot of the songs were in this fantasy world they created on that album but there's some very sincere songs as well like "She's Leaving Home" and "A Day in the Life". Even for the happier or as you'd call them "childish" songs on the album still appeal to me. I think sometimes making songs that are happy or silly or whatever can be *very* mature. Life's not all gloom and doom and sex and drugs (although there's plenty of that to be found in The Beatles' music as well). I don't know, I should just stop now since this conversation's already been had and I know the outcome.

plz to explain

I guess it's not actually a bad movie, but I personally do not like it one bit. It's just really damn boring, though maybe Redux is partially to blame for this. And the ending really disappointed me, all the time Kurtz is described as some genius but I did not see what was so brilliant about his actions at all.

Hardly heavy metal, but hard rock maybe.

Terminator isn't a horror movie, it's an action movie, and the liquid terminator was a bad ass.
Substitute "compelling" for "scary" then

The Kinks are a much less overrated band than the Beatles, and I actually like them better.
Agreed although I like the Beatles a lot too. My favorite band of that time though is the Beach Boys

Are you aware that the movie is largely based off of a novel?

i *quite* like plenty of beatles up to and including revolver, i get nothing out of 99% of what followed though. as i've said before i MUCH prefer stuff like love, zombies, byrds, even the beach boys and that's before we start getting into the harder/weirder '60s and early '70s rock. the doors KILL the beatles, KILL KILL KILL.

the kinks i'm basically neutral towards at best. not particularly fond of S&G either, or most of the horrible trash they influenced.

i really really like 'apocalypse now' and 'heart of darkness' but can't quite bring myself to love either. 'the conversation' is my favourite coppola hands down, actually.

seeing as i started this thread i should throw a few out there as well.

in rainbows > ok computer

'eyes wide shut' is my favourite kubrick

i wish so hard that terrence malick had been around in the '20s and not around now. or would at least have the decency to stop it with the dialogue, he's like tarkovsky for romantic dreamy 16 year olds.

'jurassic park' is my favourite spielberg. HE LEFT US! HE LEFT US! i still haven't seen 'close encounters' or 'duel' though.

american beauty, forrest gump, shawshank redemption, crash (haggis), garden state, million dollar baby all SUCK ASS, to varying degrees.

Forrest Gump is awesome

please explain why you think this. help me to help you.

as far as i can tell the only reason for liking a film which celebrates the idea of retardation getting the chicks (and smarter people incidentally dying of AIDS) is that you, i dunno, share in that retardation?

Yes, but I don't see what difference it makes. It's either a poor adaption (in my opinion) or simply based on a book I wouldn't like.

Love and The Doors are easily my favourite bands of the 60's.

On a semi-related note, have you heard An American Prayer, and is it worth the time?

Shawshank Redemption is an incredible movie. You're just wrong in that department no country  The ending is actually the worst part of the film (it's too Hollywood); but that movie has some of the best lines and characters in it.

I agree

I like the characters, I like the soundtrack and the emotional parts connect with me. I don't really look for a message, I just enjoy it.

i would be upset if a movie like gump pushed my buttons, honestly.

shawshank is really really really good at embodying just about everything i hate about, well, everything i hate. it's films like that which make me despise the idea that 'objective quality' can have any utility, 'cause i recognise its achievement of its horrible aims and dislike it all the more for that. same applies to most of the films i hate (more than just disliking), i'd rather someone only managed to shoot my dog in the leg rather than successfully putting one through the face, y'know?

Horrible aims = quality judgment, so there's no way you're giving an objective analysis there anyway (though you weren't claiming to).

I can't recall anyone here mentioning them in a positive context, so this might be controversial, but I think Muse is a fucking awesome band.
