I can't say I'd call Portal "tech death" at all either. Portal's just... Portal. Hell "Portal death" should be its own genre now that bands like Mitochondrion and others are trying to follow along.

I'm not saying I don't like them man, they are really technical with less riffs that actually stand out, with not much groove or catchyness going on, this is my fucking opinion anyway, so blow me.

If you're looking at early Psycroptic material they're incredibly unique for the genre, and thereby far less boring than the majority of the genre.

I don't think they're boring, but Akerfeldt has come across as pretentious to me, sometimes.

I only hear that on their last album, sounds more like they just aren't using enough gain. Sounds exactly like my 6260 with the gain on 2.5.

He kind of has a "holier than thou" attitude towards certain things. I'm still a fan of him and his music, and I'm not trying to bash him, I'm just saying he can act a bit pretentious sometimes.
