The description that I gave provided at least as much information about what the music sounded like as the one that you gave, especially since I provided examples of what heavy metal sounds like in the form of specific bands mentioned by name.

The version I gave are dictionary ones. ( not my own )

I thank you for your own definition of heavy meatl, however, if I may say, it isnt a specific definition, it can apply to any guitar music. It isnt a definition that applies specifically to heavy metal.

Reread what you posted as to the definition of heavy metal music ` It's a type of rock music defined by a heavier sound that can vary quite a bit` ... that can apply to any guitar band, or most rock bands. It doesnt give a definition of the particular genre of heavy metal .

Tell me why it is that you think that I dont understand heavy metal. I am discussing this with people, I am not arguing, I have no ego.

I am asking for what people would put in a dictionary as to what the definition of heavy metal is.

This is the google definition of rock music ( which I dont agree with ) --- a form of popular music which evolved from rock and roll and pop music during the mid and late 1960s. Harsher and often self-consciously more serious than its predecessors, it was initially characterized by musical experimentation and drug-related or anti-establishment lyrics.

Thats an interesting one, I can see that it is in the area, but there are rock bands that use distortion too. I agree that the distortion pedal description could be part of a definition.

It really is more to do with tone that actual musical content IMO. At their extremes, black metal, death metal and doom have few traits that could fall under a single umbrella definition.

I guess there are some alt rock bands with pretty heavy guitar tones, but arguably they were inspired to do so by metal in the first place.

I have an ignorance of the last couple of decades of heavy metal, yes. I agree . But, the metal Ive listened to from the stuff thats been posted in here, it hasnt had melodies in it for the most part. The black metal documentary ( the Norwegian one )that someone posted somewhere on this forum was very good, I enjoyed watching that with my afternoon cup of tea.

Listen to this. I mean you'll probably hate it because it's extreme metal, but it's extremely melodic. It also doesn't fit in with your description with what heavy metal is, despite obviously being a metal song. Maybe you're not talking about the entire genre of metal though and you're more referring to traditional metal.

Yeah, I have to say that that song had a sort of melody in the guitar tune. The guitar line sounded like early Iron Maiden, sort of pahntom of the opera type stuff, the maiden with Dianno singing. I will say this, that song with the singing being deep bass and also non-human-esque and the fast paced bass riff and non stop fast drumming is clearly heavy metal or rather, to my ignorance, black metal. See if someone played some Billie Holliday and then played that song there, you could say, ` I know which of those songs is Jazz and which one of those songs is Metal` but how do you put it into words, or a definition?

In my opinion, the band UFO are not heavy metal, they are very close to being heavy metal, or maybe they are heavy metal, some of it is, but whichever, they do not sound at all like the `Sacrementum` band. There is a HUGE diference.

There may be a lot of variation but there is a generalistic and strongly recurring theme and sound right through most of metal.

It can definately be defined in a generalistic way.

I havent previously been considering or referring to the `Sacramentum` and new types of metal genre because I am ignorant of them, I have been referring to the Judas Priest type Heavy Metal.

Well, it is true, each sub genre can be defined, BUT, if so why cannot Heavy Metal be defined? if it has sub genres then heavy metal is by nature a generalistic term and can thus be defined by a generalistic definition.

Where I am coming from, at my age and from being back in the day, to me saying deep purple is like Judas Priest is just like saying that Judas Priest is like Sacramentum. They arent.

I do admire the dedication to the music that these musicians love ( referring to the black metal and what have you ). They dont sell out and are honest to their field.
