Late 80s/early 90s for me because I got into metal around 87 and rode the wave of thrash into death and it was fucking amazing.

I can't pick a particular time period to be superior over others because a lot of the bands that I like are very out of place for when their albums were released.

Cirith Ungol, for example, began releasing albums in the 1980s, but their music doesn't really sound like your usual 1980s metal because the band was around for so long before they released their first album and many of their songs are from the 1970s.

I never realized they were that old but that makes perfect sense. I've always thought they had a more 70s heavy metal sound.

Oh yeah, they were formed in 1972. They have a lot of songs that date back to the 1970s, including some that haven't been officially released.

Falcon, a band which features Greg Lindstrom from Cirith Ungol, has recorded some Cirith Ungol songs that weren't ever properly recorded by the band. He left the band in 1982 but he helped write a lot of their best material.

'Atom Smasher,' 'Cirith Ungol' and 'Death of the Sun' were all songs we had written together in the mid 70's, and 'Finger of Scorn' was one of my songs that the band used with my blessing.

93-96 was the best stretch in metal history. I don't see depth in the 80s. A handful of killer albums per year, but not the bredth and depth of the early-mid 90s.

I agree on the time period (I'd actually stretch it to include all of the 90s) but I can't agree the 80s lacked depth. The 80s ruled as well.

Meh. There are a few years like 88, but mostly I'm not seeing it. I'm sure there are some gems I'm just not familiar with, but it's nowhere near what the early-mid 90s were. In the 90s you have black, death, doom, power, and prog all peaking. There's just an abundance of great and innovative stuff coming out.

Doom metal arguably could be said to have peaked in the 90's. Revelation, Scald, Solitude Aeturnus, Solstice, Iron Man...

Though I think it's just more a case of doom metal being very very consistent.
