Controversial opinions on metal

Only half controversial, not a big fan of Cathedral. They're God-tier compared to drivel like Trivium though.

Not the same genre so you can't really compare. It's like comparing a Mosin Nagant to a Glock. The only similarity is that both are firearms.

I will tell you that I would rather listen to Trivium or Avenged Sevenfold than most doom metal though. Not sure why we're going to get into this argument again because it's been established that I don't like most doom metal *shrug*

Tbh Cathderal redeemed themselves to me with The Last Spire. Massive album and perfect farewell for a band that had kind of lost their way.

LIVING IN THE SHADOOOWWWW..... OF A DAMNED CATHEDRAAAAL.

I doubt you’re going to like it honestly. But they went back from all that nonsense they had been doing to just heavy doom metal. Bone crunching stuff, if nothing else.

System of a Down counts as a real metal band. At least from what I've heard from them so far, I think it's unfair to pigeonhole them as "nu metal". How is a song like BYOB not metal?

They are not "nu metal", but they are not metal at all. They are "alternative" rock with some very occasional metal element thrown into the mix. They were lumped with the other nu metal bands mainly for their breakthrough's coincidental time and sharing stage with such bands.
