Does race matter in metal?

At least some of you are able to get over the whole racial issue when it comes to metal.

Being black and liking metal is not easy to deal with, trust me. You get discrimination and alienation from all sides.

People in your family look at you weird for not liking hip hop and R & B, and the white kids think you're just trying to fit in with them.

I'm half Mexican, although, really, I'm about as honky as one can get. Please call me Mayanaise from now on.

The whole concept of race, anthropologically, is bunkum.

Living Color is my favorite black metal band.

Music is music. "White" people can play jazz, and Dagestanians can play the blues. Iraqis can play traditional Iroquois songs, to be ironic. IT DOESN'T FUCKING MATTER!

Until the next time I post, probably three weeks from now, I remain,

Eh, I'm a Hispanic that listens to metal and loves every minute. So I guess that makes me in the minority .1% that listens to metal. Coo! Affirmitive Action baby!

Ahem...

Race never has, nor will it ever have any effect on the quality of music that is being produced.

Hey, you're not alone man. I'm hispanic and i love metal. It's not easy being a hispanic metalhead, either, at least not where i live. Around here, Hispanics mostly listen to rap or mariachi or whatever, and i don't and some hispanics give me a hard time about it, saying i should listen to this, not that, etc. One actually called me a traitor...that was weird. It shouldn't matter what you listen to, since when was there ever a required music for a race? "Oh, you're black, you have to listen to rap!" You listen to what you like, regardless of race.

As for blacks in metal. If there are black metalheads out there, more power to them! There just aren't a whole lot, because of the culture that surrounds them. They exposed to rap or whatever, they grow up around it, it grows on them, they learn to like it. I escaped my surrounding culture with friends who were metalheads, but in most cases, people make friends of their own kind, who are also exposed to the same culture. It all comes down to culture, but it doesn't matter what type of music you listen to. If you're black and like metal, great, if not, that's ok too.

alot of black kids might like metal because of the agression but don't because of the culture around them telling them, "oh you're trying to be white."

living colour was half jazz but they could rock heavily...and then when you get right down to it, the godfather of metal guitar, Jimi Hendrix, some people today would give their left nut to play as well as he did over 30 yrs ago. I just heard his version of Star spangled banner and he was just a monster.

then there's Rocky George, former guitarist from Suicidal Tendencies.

btw my wife is irish, black, and native american, and her brother, who lives in LA is a heavy metalhead.

I always see one or two black guys at death metal shows. I think metal has nothing to do with race. Good music is to be enjoyed by every one weather they are from Sir Lanka or Peru. If music is only made for white people or black people or mexican people then it is lacking somthing.

...black people(for example) are much more positive in their approach to life...

Why yes of course. "All muh hoez out dere! We be smokin, chillin', killing hoez!" "Shut up biatch or I'll put my dick in yo mouth!" Or how about "Nigga, give me muh stuff or I muh make you bleed boy!" Very positive indeed.

If you said, Orientals are, I'd believe you.. but Black people, you got it all wrong.

"I would really like to hear a Metal band with only african people :)"

Well heard of God Forbid? They're real good.

I'm Japanese Canadian and I'm proudly a heavy metaller. I used to go to Japanese school and I was the only one there that likes this music (everybody there hated it with a passion). Sometimes people say I'm trying to act white cause of this. Anybody should be welcomed to like heavy metal regardless of race.

One problem about black people in metal could be that when they go to a metal gig they see about 99% of white people who look at them strangely because it´s unusual to see a black person there. In such conditions I would feel unwelcome too and I wouldn´t feel well either.
Perhaps this problem could be solved if there were more black musicians in popular metal bands (how about exchanging James Hetfield by any black metalhead? ;) )

:) So what we should do is roll down the red carpet and bow down to them so they don't feel 'strange?' Just wondering.

Its all about the point of view...

There are more metal heads in Europe than in... Mexico for example. And you all know that in europe most of the people is white, that's the way it is and that's the way it allways will be.
So whats the matter in Mexico and in Africa??(and some other countries)
We have a difrent culture, we are most likely to listen to cumbia and that stuff.. its something like.. the "latin flavour". Its soooo hot in here, all year, so most of the people has a summer mood all the time, . That dosen't mean we don't like metal, there are a lot of metal heads here, who also like the latin music (like me).
I think the same thing happens around the world...

Its matter of culture... the culture from each country.

It's good to see non-white people speaking up on this board and saying that they like metal. But is black metal meant to be racist? All the aryan pride and nazi shit they promote in their songs and image wouldn't exactly welcome non-white people to their music I don't think.

Even having said that, most other styles are essentially non-racist, which is good.

Not all black metal bands promote nazi beliefs. And before some one tries to flame and call me "untr00" and not "grim" or "n3cr0" enough... I'll spare you the trouble and tell you you're right.

I mean... why would anyone want to listen to diverse music when we can listen to a band produce the same abulm over and over?

It depends on the band. Some bands promote white-power stuff, some bands promote Satan, some bands promote christianity, and I think they're not exactly wanting to welcome people with different minds to their music (except maybe the christians and their converting...). If a band takes a political stand, they will lose some possible fans, but most metal (especially tr00 grim and kvlt national socialistic black metal) isn't about being popular or famous. Personally I think it's ok for a band to have a political/religious stand, even though their opinion might be utterly moronic.

A lot of kids (Japanese, Caucasian etc) I know listens to nu-metal but very few listen or even know about the extreme metal we listen to. "Pantera? Who?" All the time people look at me funny and say something like "HOW CAN YOU LISTEN TO THIS SHIT" when they get to know I like bands like Obituary and frankly it gets annoying at times but I'm used to it. Sometimes it feels weird to be an Oriental metaller cause there's barely any of us. Most Oriental kids I know listen to rap, techno and J-POP and all that (I hate most of it).
