Does race matter in metal?

There might be some racist black metal bands (heh, what bullshit) but it doesn't matter so much to me since I was never really a black metal fan. We all know there are plenty of Nazi punk bands and if I can I'll make them all listen to Napalm Death-Nazi Punks Fuck Off.

What do you guys think?

Why is it that at least 99.9% of people who listen to metal are white?

I think it is more culture than race. When rock and roll started in the 50's black artists like Little Richard and Chuck Berry were huge innovators for the genre. Unfortunately the market for "black" music specifically grew as black people became became more prominant as consumers for music. I think once that happened, most black musicians started making music that was geared for that black public.
The problem with black people playing metal is simply because during the time (high school age) that most people find their preferred style of music, they have limited access to metal because their friends aren't listening to metal and would probably shun metal if they were interested in it.
Although America is a melting pot of races and cultures, too often the like races and cultures group together. I hope that changes as time goes by as there are some incredibly gifted black musicians that could really contribute a great deal to the metal genre.

"I would really like to hear a Metal band with only african people :)"

Well heard of God Forbid? They're real good.

I'm Japanese Canadian and I'm proudly a heavy metaller. I used to go to Japanese school and I was the only one there that likes this music (everybody there hated it with a passion). Sometimes people say I'm trying to act white cause of this. Anybody should be welcomed to like heavy metal regardless of race.

I agree. My wife (Harumi) is Japanese. She came to the US to go to college and learn the language, but I grabbed her up and wouldn't let her go. >:P~ She loves metal music especially Vanden Plas, DT and Angra. She still listens to some Utada and some other Japanese singers, but her favorite is metal. If anyone looked at her wrong at a show, they are seriously flirting with a knuckle sandwich but at progressive shows there doesn't seem to be problems like that.

At least some of you are able to get over the whole racial issue when it comes to metal.

Being black and liking metal is not easy to deal with, trust me. You get discrimination and alienation from all sides.

People in your family look at you weird for not liking hip hop and R & B, and the white kids think you're just trying to fit in with them.

I think most 'minority' people will actually look less weird according to white people if they try to fit in with them. Most white people are probably more accepting of non-white people dressing like metalheads, then, say, something else such as the traditional costume of their native country. However there are still some narrow minded idiots out there who think that metal is only made by white people, for white people.

I second the notion of culture playing a HUGE part in what one listens to and becomes. Cultural connection is what brings us to the music we listen to.
Metal was created by the White Euro/American culture, so it would be hard for a say, black man, to understand, unless he grew up in the culture, or at least exposed to it enough that he understood it.
I don't listen to Rap/Hip Hop because it does not connect with me. Songs about the gangstas, ghettos, etc are not the reality that I grew up with or know.
(and I am not going to try to be one either...I am a middle class white male who has never been to a ghetto)
The first band I was in, the drummer was a Mexican guy..he was a darn great drummer! He was the outcast of his family because he was not into all the stuff the family was into. Not only music, but the fact he wanted to be a American and asorb into our culture. He did not want to listen to mariachi, dress like the others, etc...This brought him to metal..he understood what it was about at that point.

Maybe as we see more cultures/races integrate, we will see more races involved in metal.

When I mention race, most people just think of white or black. What about, say, Hispanics or Asians? How come they don't have a unique style of music that defines their culture, like the black people do?

Are you kiddin' bud? latin people are known for their music, you've never heard any latin music or latin rhythms?

Seriously, you've never heard any latin music? That's one of the best things about the latin culture, the music and dancing.
Yes, I have heard of latin music, but it's not integrated into mainstream youth culture in the same way that metal and rap are (with the possible exception of a few artists such as ricky martin) and I wonder why this is so.

In any event, metal is wholly the creation of Indo-European (white) culture, and its greatness lies in its embrace of the values of ancient white cultures.

You must be Chris Blanc/S.R. Prozac/Goat/Evilmusic.com/etc. It's the only way you could be so pretentious AND stupid. You looked mighty dark in that driver's license photo, Mr. El Blanco... (Can I call you "El Blanco"?)

I have it on fairly good authority (Calvert Watkins, who is, by the way, > you) that the Indo-European language family contains (to be master of the obvious) the INDIC sub-family of languages. Not to mention Kurdish, Afghani, Persian, etc. Are they also "white"? Or just the German and Celtic languages?

Some more questions: how does one attach any sort of racial superiority to a linguistic grouping that can only be HYPOTHESIZED ABOUT? Second, how can the "values" of a PRE-HISTORIC peoples of which we know only slightly more than nothing be used to justify and/or make claims to "white" racial superiority? "DUDE TEH PROTO-IE SPEAKES HAD MEAD AND AGRICULTURES, SO THEY R SI GREATEST OF ALL PEOPLZ!!!!11!" Please don't drop the Astatru bomb either. You show me documentary evidence of a 40,000 sun worshipping cult, and I'll show you a nine foot long penis with retractable claws.

What is "whiteness" anyway? And while I'm at it, are the Japanese and Chinese white? Because I know quite a few of them that are more crackered out than I am...

I sorry to tell, Prozzy (can I cal you "Prozzy") that the minutes of the Colloquium of the Prussian Philological Society of 1884 no longer constitute good linguistic research.

Latin music is popular as hell in latin america (did you guessed? ;)) again, culture plays a big role here. In the US kids don't grow up listening to Salsa or merengue, but in latin america latin music is pretty popular among the young ones. I have a friend (he's 17) and he's into salsa, you can find him pretty often at parties dancing with chicks and having a good time. I'm sure if latin artists (those who make latin music) would get more promotion on the US, things would be different.

For alot of people music is just entertianment. This is why they listin to what ever is popular in there country, or region. For a few it is art. And if it is art then it dosent matter were you are from you can enjoy it.

Also there are alot of entertianment bands in metal dont get me wrong. There are alot of metal heads who like metal for entertianment, bands that fit in this area are Soilwork and scarculture. The art bands are bands like Abigor and Nargaroth.
