As several social commentators have pointed out (most notably DePaul sociologist Deena Weinstein), metal emerged as a reaction against the feminization and africanization of popular culture by adopting the values of the last great white artistic movement, Romanticism.
This is actually a very interesting point you raise. I am not educated in the roots of metal, therefore cannot be certain, but I can see how it could easily have been effected by romanticism (or serialism in later cases).
However, I think that this should not create racial boundaries.
As a genre develops, the range of styles in it broaden. Since metal emerged there have been bands that have embraced, and taken influence from black culture:
- Dream Theater, King Crimson, Cynic and Atheist were clearly influenced by jazz, a "traditionally" black genre.
- Tool and Opeth (in more recent albums) have taken influence from traditionally eastern musical styles.
- And while I'm not a great fan, many nu metal / metal crossover bands such as Sepultura have clearly been influenced by their own, non-white cultures.
I think that over time, metal will evolve, breaking race boundaries, like many other genres have. There will still be Dissection, but there will also be a variety of other bands which don't kill gay people, or lynch blacks.
