Doom Metal

I love all three albums equally, but there really is something "magical" about M&M, there's so much emotion in it. The Erl King in particular, gets me every time. To be honest, for me this album is about as close to perfection as you can get.

Excellent post! I think they really hit the nail on the head with M&M. While it takes all the best elements of their previous two albums it still manages to find something new to throw into the mix. The guitar work is the best they've ever done imo, and the production is so fitting. The vocals are what makes the album though. The nasal folkish tone coming from Terry Jones completes what Pagan Altar is trying to convey. And it results in their most epic album yet.

I agree about The Erl King, easily the best track on the album. It is stunning. Nothing beats The Black Mass though. :p

What are the general opinions of:

The Wizar'd
While Heaven Wept
Isole
Scald - Will of the Gods is Great Power

I liked the Wizar'd very much, though some of it is a bit derivative.

Isole are fucking AWESOME. Their first is very much like a more "sleepy" sounding Solitude Aeturnus, and they've got both progressively darker and more aggressive with each release. Their third (and current) album is a corker.

Uncreation:
(this is no flame) do you really think that those Pantheist or Nortt albums are better then for example Stream From the Heavens or Stormcrowfleet? Didn't think anyone seriously would think that. :p
I just picked up the Stromcrowfleet, and am listening to it now. Apart from the fact that it is irritatingly quiet, it seems quite good, indeed. Not up there with the albums I listed, as of yet, but perhaps it will grow on me with further listens. Thanks for the recommendation (as I guess it was one, even if it was in a somewhat roundabout fashion).

Nice! It is really good. More majestic and solemn rather than pure sadness imo. I think I'll listen to it after I finish Carpathian Wolves!

Damn, I didn't even know Southern Lord was reissuing Burning Witch's "Crippled Lucifer" until I stumbled upon it in a record shop the other day. I ended up picking it up though, and man I forgot how awesome this band was. Really nice job on the packaging of this thing too.

:kickass:Their new one is great. Possibly their best effort yet.

Yes indeed!

Currently enthusing about the Lamp of Thoth, too. Great stuff!

They are quite tasty indeed and hey, they cover Cirith Ungol's "Frost & Fire" so what's not to love?

What's people's thoughts on the Swedish Doom band Tristitia? I think they're definitely on par with the likes of Count Raven and Grand Magus, though Tristitia definitely gets my nod in the vocal department, as CR are too similar to Ozzy, while I find GM's to be a bit uninteresting. Just my take though.

JB's vocals are my favourite part of Grand Magus, but I'd agree with you about Count Raven (not that there's anything wrong with that!). I'd be interested to hear Tristitia.

I fucking love Count Raven! Yes, they're clearly vocals trying to be like Ozzy, but that's part of the charm - and the music is so damned trad-doom it makes me smile just to hear the riffing!

I really need to get a hold of the first Sheavy album with the bonus live disc - there was a track on there that sounded like Ozzy singing with AC/DC (though I cant remember what the fuck the track was called - anyone help there >?)

Indeed, Count Raven is probably the best Swedish doom band after Candlemass. Grand Magus & Co has no chance really.

Lunar Womb with The Obsessed has rocked my world lately, so ridiculously good.

Just reviewed Chapter VI re-issue. Good quality re-issue, to be sure, but fuck, Candlemass had all but given up by this point, hadn't they ?

Which is a shame because I really like Tomas Vikstrom's voice.
