Doom Metal

So what's the best stuff from Cathedral? I'm not sure if I should start with "The Garden of Unearthly Delights" album or not?

So many answers, and I'm still not sure when Cathedral goes from Doom to Stoner Doom.

The Carnival Bizarre is really where the more "Wacky" elements that were present on "The Ethereal Mirror" come to the fore. Supernatural Birth Machine is probably the first entirely stoner doom album they did, with Caravan beyond redemption being their last entire stoner album.

That being said, their Stoner albums are still much MUCH better than pretty much anybody else in the genre.

(But then I would say that, because I want to bum Lee Dorrian).

his vocals annoy me after a while

just getting ethereal mirror, forest of equilibrium, and carnival bizarre will do you just fine for all your cathedral needs

That actually does Cathedral a big disservice. Many of their later albums are fine releases. Endtyme is a really dark, harsh doom album, for instance. "North Berwick Witch Trials" from The Garden of Unearthly Delights is worth the admission price alone, and the VIIth coming is a near perfect mix of all eras of Cathedral doom.

You would probably be best starting off the Cathedral collection with your suggestions, but to stop there would be a damned fine shame. Cathedral just don't get the kudos they deserve, in my opinion.

fair enough. but the way i see it, FoE, EM, and TCB each represent the best of what Cathedral had to offer. i do enjoy some of the EP tracks, but none are essential. Endtyme and everything after has not been up to snuff, imo. just seems a rehash of what they've done before, but not as good.

i just feel there have always been better bands around either in trad doom or stoner doom. that's not to see ignoring cathedral is acceptable, as they do have their moments and worthwhile releases.

lee dorrian, while the heart and soul of the band, just grates on me after a few songs. a shame, as the music is top notch.

The VIIth Coming isn't that good.

It's not their most consistant release due to the "Smorgasbord" approach to the song writing, but the likes of Nocturnal Fist, Black Robed Avenger and Congregation of Sorcerors are pure class.

I wouldn't say it was their best, but I still find it a much more engaging listen than releases of several of their peers.

Hmmm, I am not too familiar with the genre of Doom Metal either. Daylight Dies and Swallow The Sun are really the only ones I know. I thoroughly enjoy Daylight Dies. I also recently discovered the band Worship. Does anyone else like them?

Some Doom Metal I do not like because it is too slow and a bit boring to me but it is not terrible because I know I have heard Doom songs that are quite good. But I will be taking some of you guys' recommendations and looking up these bands!

Funeral doom IS slow and boring.
