DT influence?

There are actually many fantastic progressive metal bands, so I'm assuming you just haven't found them, or plainly, you don't have too much of an interest in the genre (which is fine).

Porcupine Tree, Wolverine, Opeth, Beyond Twilight, Katatonia... those alone sound completely different than the ones you've mentioned, and from each other. There are a ton of prog rock bands out there that hold their own as well...

There are also a lot of metal inspired bands that extend from non-metal roots. Obviously the jazz influence is prominent in a lot of proggy stuff, but there's some more experimental bands from the 70s that have inspired modern bands in great ways. Take Henry Cow / Art Bears. Craaazy stuff for its time, and still is now. I'd say Sleepytime Gorilla Museum are quite influenced by them, while also keeping an awesome metal feel to a lot of songs.

If you're finding stuff is sounding too similar, take a trip back in time and find some new roots to explore .

Oh so true. Though your talking about what must have been a more isolated band there has been alot of infulences working in metal and progressive metal in bands from the early 70's.
