Essential Death Metal

i'm not really into all that undergroud/obscure stuff, in either DM or BM, but essential DM in my opinion:

Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness; Blessed are the Sick; Covenant; Domination

Death - Leprosy; Spiritual Healing; Individual Thought Patterns; Symbolic

Bloodbath - Resurrection Through Carnage

Edge of Sanity - Crimson I; Crimson II

Monstrosity - Imperial Doom; Millenium; In Dark Purity; Rise to Power

The Crown - Deathrace King; Crowned in Terror

old records from the following bands: In Flames, Soilwork, AtG, Arch Enemy

and of course, Opeth - MAYH

Moonlapse, I know you've heard nearly everything in there, but this was just in general, for people just trying to get into DM. Look further into MA though, and try out Monstrosity, if you haven't already.

haha! i was at media play the other day looking for many of these albums. number found: 0. i'm not sure what i was thinking........it'd be funny if they had a section called "stuff no one but you wants to hear".

The internet is just so much better than paying like 14-18.99 for a CD. But sometimes I really just like to go out and buy a CD in a store like the old days.

death (the band, not the condition) is the most essential death metal band. get their album "human", it is amazing. i know by this point you're probably sick of reading humongous lists of death metal bands, but death is really the one you need to get into.

"the sound of perseverance" is the band's best album by far, but it is the last and has the best production, so people hate it because... i dunno, they're afraid of good production. they think the music must be bad if the production is good. so if you are too hardcore for tsop, get "human"
\

no, its because his vocals sucked on the sound of perseverance. and often the material got monotonous and a bit overbearing for some. Symbolic is probably a better example of the bands capability and sound, without the material being compromised by Chucks' ego at the time, and his faltering vocal performance.

Well Death was Chuck's band, and under Chuck's rule alone they've made great albums. The reason why "hardcore" death metallers don't think much of sound of perseverance is because of the fact that it really isn't death metal. It's too melodic and technical they say. The same reason goes for Symbolic, if not more, and the Individual thought patterns and Human albums. Pure death metallers just like the old thrashy, less technical Death stuff (first 3 albums). But most Death fans, thankfully aren't close minded.

no. in fact, theres probably only been about 5 tr00 death metal bands that ever came out of finland.

Obituary - Slowly We Rot
Luciferion - Demonification (The Manifest)
Atheist - Unquestionable Presence
Autopsy - Severed Survival
Gorguts - Obscura

 Looks pretty tr00 to me.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far. I think I'm gonna move onto Vader next, because I recall hearing their stuff in the past and loving it... I love that rhythmic thrash/death sound.

gorguts - from wisdom to hate (strangest album ive ever heard although i havnt heard obscura yet ;) )

cephalic carnage - lucid interval, exploiting dysfunction (the new one is great but not nearly as incredible)
death - all
morbid angel - blessed are the sick
nile - all are great but in the beginning is mediocre
cynic - focus
