For me the winner is clearly Cannibal Corpse's "The Bleeding". Everything about this album is fantastic: vocals, bass, drums, guitars, production (though it is a little muddy, the guitars sound killer), heck even the lyrics while certainly far from serious material are quite effective at times (Staring Through the Eyes of the Dead, Stripped, Raped and Strangled for example). Every song is great, every riff is great. There is not one wasted note on the whole disc. Close contenders for favorite death metal album would be: Cannibal Corpse- Tomb of the Mutilated (which in my opinion is the epitome of the death metal sound) and Morbid Angel- Blessed are the Sick.
What is your favorite album of the genre? Also feel free to comment/criticize my choice.

My personal favourite is Obituary - Cause of Death
vocals - spot on
guitars - great riffs, great solos, good level of distortion
drumming - excellent, hardly ever boring
I don't know why people seem to prefer Slowly We Rot.

Cause of Death is a classic! In fact it was the second death metal album I ever heard. A friend of my best friend copied Tomb of the Mutilated and Cause of Death for me on a tape and that was my introduction to death metal.

I think Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness and Death - Human are the finest death metal albums I've heard. I never really got into Scandinavian death metal very much.
Altars of Madness is great. Never heard Human though. Loved the first two Death albums though.

I really enjoy Decapitated - Winds Of Creation. It's probably that album, or Cryptopsy's None So Vile. I could never really get into the "classics".

Really? My favorite death metal is late 80's early 90's stuff.

On Suffocation, I could venture a guess why the dislike, but it remains one of my favorites, nonetheless. That and Cryptopsy's Whisper Supremacy.

was it really necessary to quote the entire post for that response?

also you can delete certain parts of posts when quoting... it's allowed.

Yes actually it is necessary. There's a person standing right next to me with a gun who demands I quote the entire thing. Sorry.
