Yes, 'Songs for the Withering' was very good.

Amorphis remains my favorite of all the Fins that I've heard. Elegy is one of my ATF's.

Yeah, Rapture rules, great songwriting skills...similar to old Katatonia but they have their own identity, with melodic death & goth influences, Silent Stage is great too, tho i prefer Songs for the Withering.

Apart from a few bands from Norway, the future of (extreme) metal these days now lies in far eastern Europe, France and also parts of central Asia. These are are producing excellent material, their scenes are raw and new:

eg
- Darkestrah
- Deathspell Omega
- Drudkh
- MGŁA
- Negură Bunget

I also feel Canada is producing great stuff with Agalloch and (sadly now defunct) Goat Horn.

As much as I love metal from Norway, Sweden and Finland (I *love* Shape of Despair), I think those areas for now are somewhat exhausted (note, not shit), and new, more fresh ideas are coming from some countries we've never heard of.

As for Finland - there is definitely something about the style from this country which reeks of stale cheese - perhaps its the emphasis on the manufactured kind of sound with clean vocals, or overuse of melody?

Nevertheless, they *do* have some good bands. Rapture's first album Futile was great, but since they've moved into a more commercial direction.
