Ok, I have read enough posts that continuously refer to
anything that isnt what they like as "nu-metal". Last I checked, Katatonia
has not had a single rap verse on their album. Nor have they even remotely associated
themselves with all of these nu-metal bands. Any time a band puts out a new album
that is different from the last one, it is instantly tagged as being too "nu-metal".
Holy shit, they had screaming in the background on one song!!! Wait, they must be Nu-Metal.
Because any band with background screams is Nu-metal. Let us not forget they used
to scream in the very old days. Does this mean that if they scream in a death metal
tone then its ok but if they scream in a clearer tone that they are nu-metal? Im
just saying that it doesnt matter what you call a band, if they are good they are good.
Drop the useless labels, kick back, relax, and enjoy the damn music already! Having said
that, I think that Viva Emptiness is quite possibly the best album Katatonia have ever
put out. It still conveys the dark atmosphere that Katatonia have become known for and yet
it packs a slightly harder punch than some of their more recent work. Though I still say
Sulpher is the best LFDGD track and definately one of their best songs ever.
Firstly, I have mentioned previously that i dont view all the bands associated with nu-metal as being shit, because some of them are or were doing what they do first, i.e they're at least original. That's fair enough. Korn and the Deftones are respect worthy because they've always had their own sound.
System of a Down are classed nu-metal and they have an original sound, some proper musical talent and stage-presence. They make a difference. To a lesser extent, slipknot do too.
I dont like slipknot a fat lot, but i'll give them credit for their musical talents.
Bands like soil, drowning pool, disturbed on the other hand and youre talking cliched fake angst, childishly simple lyrics, dumbed-down riffs, some seriously stupid sounding vocals, over-played image(fashion gear more often nowadays) or just plain recycled ideas from other bands - often Korn or the Deftones.
Another point is that of the bands i mentioned(soil, drowning poo, kittie) only
disturbed use "rap" in their songs,
yet all of them are counted as nu-metal. Your point about the band associating themselves with nu-metal is neither here nor there.
It is fair to say that i referrence that part of "ghost of the sun" a lot, but its not simply because of the fact they scream on the backing vocals. I have made it clear that i am aware of the bands musical past and in fact this is one of the main reasons i berate their new album. I refer to the song part because it sounds like the most generic "heavy-bit" typically found on songs by lame nu-metal bands. Theres no escaping the fact that that part sounds like nu-metal. Of the crap variety.
Finally, I have to point out that neither I nor anyone else ever said this about katatonia
when they changed their sound before, so what youre saying about people tagging it nu-metal
just because it is different from the last is bollocks really. Nobody said nu-metal to
Discouraged Ones, Tonights decision or LFDGD and not bloody suprising as you'd have a job to.
