Favourite albums of all time?

I agree that Let It Be is somewhat of a weak album... there are some really good songs on there (Across the Universe, Long and Winding Road, title track) but most of the other ones are pretty forgettable compared to other songs in the Beatles catalog. The album just isn't as fluid as previous ones-- there's actually tracks that I could skip while listening to it.

sgt. peppers is by far the most overrated beatles album. a few flashy studio tricks and good timing made it a classic with boomers, but it doesn't make up for the ho-hum songwriting. "lovely rita"? "she's leaving home"? hardly standout material, especially by the beatles standard. "good morning" is like a subpar version of the much better "here comes the sun". i'm sorry, "when i'm sixty-four" annoys the hell out of me too, mccartney could write that in his sleep. and for being such revolutionaries, "getting better" is an awfully anti-hippie sentiment. sure, "a day in the life" is a classic, but a lot of pompous posturing, lsd, and silly costumes alone do not a great album make.

and don't even try to say "black metal bands have plenty of pompous posturing and silly costumes" because i know they do, and plenty of black metal albums suck more dick than sgt peppers.

for the record, once upon a time i was a beatles fanatic, and i do have great respect for them. but their legendary status is no defense against logical criticism.

cthulu, im dissapointed in you. not so much in your views, but in your thought that i would even think to bring up black metal in any sort of comparison with the beatles...as that would have no justice or even be in the same league in order to make such a comparison.

regardless though, i understand where youre coming from...but i also think the fact that you werent born yet and dont fully grasp the time of that albums release, especially in accordance with what else was out at the time. it will always be easier for guys like you and i to judge albums that are 40 years old too harshly...understandably so. But i disagree with several of your views on the individual songs. But to just sum it all up...the songs you listed are quite different from eachother...and especially for that time...that was a great studio and musical achievement. If you disagree, ask brian wilson...that album gave him a nervous breakdown when he tried to top it. ;)

3.Sigur ros - ( )

10.Drawn - A new World?

No particular order here.

Spiral Architect - A Skeptics Universe
Death - Sound of Perseverance
Dream Theater - Images & Words

...I could go on forever and ever ... but I won't.

the black metal comment wasn't so much directed at you as at anyone else who might jump in; i know you wouldn't try distracting from the argument by taking shots at my taste :p .

i agree that as a studio accomplishment sgt peppers was way ahead of its time, but again i don't feel like that alone can make it a great album. you say i listed songs quite different from each other, but to me it really does come off for the most part as a collection of novelty tracks, lacking cohesion and substance. it's not a *bad* album, but for the beatles i'd call it sub-par.

^man you really do like everything...but the goo goo dolls? :erk:

i can really see why you dont like them but it's just that i really find a lot of feeling in that band. but, yeah i have to admit...im not really into the REALLY poppy stuff the bass player writes...but johnny's lyrics and vocals are very touching most of the time. especially on the last album which sounds really bitter and dark at times 'cause the man got a divorce. sound =)

lou reed's "ecstasy" has the same tone due to the same reason.

and i must have added kayo dot to one of my lists =)
