it's pretty much exactly the kinda list you'd get at hellride or shadow kingdom or w/e which is a huge step up from what i would've expected from this board. love it.

comparing it with my RYM friends' top 20 (for heavy, trad doom and power), there's only 7 differences!
RYM:
dark quarterer - s/t
warlord - and the cannons...
brocas helm - defender of the crown
riot - thundersteel
pagan altar - mythical and magical
saint vitus - hallows victim
saint vitus - die healing

GMD:
candlemass - epicus
trouble - psalm 9
mercyful fate - melissa
warning - watching from a distance
adramelch - irae melanox
dio - holy diver
angel witch - angel witch

i would 100% take the GMD picks over the RYM ones (although i love both sets), so bravo!

edit: haha, saint vitus s/t is 21st in both lists.

Interesting. I'd take one of the Vitus albums and Riot from the RYM list, and replace Adramelch and Angel Witch in ours.

Never heard the warlord album, but DQ/Brocas Helm are awesome, not sure I think either are top20 material though

i'm not big on the warlord album but they have an insane reputation in 'epic metal' circles. i don't like that pagan altar album as much as basically everybody else i know either, their weakest for me, but i'm not surprised to see it in the RYM list given that the debut is number 1 for the whole of metal (4.12 from 105 ratings)!

love the other five but i didn't fit any of them in so i can't complain.

EDIT: Didn't know the Revelation dude was in Have Mercy. I listened to Inner Harbor once and have heard at least songs from their earlier stuff before (IIRC I've heard Release in full before as well several years ago but I might be wrong there) and never got the hype, but I like Have Mercy a lot so now I feel obligated and like I might have missed an important reference point. I've seen them described as proggy before (assuming that's where the Rush thing is coming from) but I don't remember being able to hear that in them either, so I dunno. I'll stream one of those from the Bandcamp.

Wait, no, I think the first one is the one I've heard (I remember that "DOOM" sticker on album scans online).

srsly? It should be well-established that Pagan Altar is primo in-crowd metal. Trad doom, mysterious origins, old as fuck, kvlt, how could people here not love them?

tbh the more I think about it the more I think the first album is a fake and wasn't really recorded in the early 1980s, just a successful ploy to dupe silly people that listen to music with their e-penises.

Revelation/against nature are pretty good. Its Nothing earth shattering. To me, Accumulus is the best thing they ever did.

Not really top 20 material.

Sad to see no love for Count Raven. Happy about Pagan Altar and Solstice. Two fantastic bands

Confusion is John Brenner

Seriously? I'm convinced you did that purposely.

It's called a typo. I barely have time to check the forums much less to play stupid games like that.

Also, I agree with Baroque. The last 5 albums on my list I don't even listen to. I appreciate and see Jag Panzer as a classic but it gets zero plays from me.

Angel Witch are great, but not better than the majority of albums on the list. I'd sacrifice their presence for Saint Vitus that much is certain.

Angel Witch is pretty much the album for that early arcane/mystical sound in metal, one of the earliest steps towards power metal. It's not quite consistent enough to make my own top 20, but it's a very worthy album regardless (at least as much as Pagan Altar and Jag Panzer, and much more so than Manilla Road).

Yeah, i don't know how Born Too Late didn't make the list. I thought i would have been one of the only people here that didn't list any of their albums ... and that's only because i haven't listened to much of their stuff. That's going to change though, i received my Hallow's Victim vinyl in the mail yesterday. :kickass:

What is there not to like about Volume 1?

wtf is up with all the hate for Angel Witch?

It's not just the lyrics, but the melody itself. "You're an angel witch, You're an angel witch!"

It reminds me of cheesy pop metal for teenage girls like nightwish or something. Oh, you're so dark girl, girl power!

It's hard to appreciate the rest of the album when the first track is that. Cool album art though.
