Guitar Tone Competition 3: Planning phase

Alright, I guess it's time to open the can of worms again. The last competition was a nice success in my opinion, except for the start up which took way too long. If we could get the show on the road by the May, I would be very happy. edit: See schedule

And here is the team that make this thing happen. MarkG, our lovely host of the two previous competitions, promised to host the competition. I will work as a QC and negotiator medium again. JeffTD makes the track and it is 90 seconds long and it features vocals by Javi Perera. I wrote the lyrics for it and they are a metaphor about this place. Ermz makes the premix of the backing tracks.

And we have actually THREE sponsor for the competition this time \o/

Signing up again.

The only thing I didn't like about the last one, was that there was a nice set of rules in place, yet they weren't adhered too. If people can't follow instructions, they shouldn't be given a second chance, they should just be removed from the competition as stated in the rules.

Otherwise, what's the point of rules?

Same goes for the deadline. If you can't get in in on time, then that's your loss. That was kinda ridiculous, we had AGES to get it done, yet the deadline kept getting pushed back for people.

Just my 2 cents.

What about having the DI for the bass aswell (a processed one for the ones that wants it ofc)? We all know that a big part of the tone is from the bass.

No. This is more of a guitar reamping case than mixing case. Make it fit the given tracks. I trust that Ermz, or whoever will mix the backingtracks, will do way better job with them than I did the last time around.

I'll be participating. Who could have guessed?

I vote that it is manditory for whomever is in charge of DIs for this competition tracks DIs through a DI box with a "thru" or "amp" output while recording the signal, as well as reamps through the same rig/mic position/etc, to insure that the quality of the DIs is not jeopardized by the person tracking them.

I had enough complaints from various people that the DI quality was an issue in getting a "good tone" for the last contest, yet when I provided my DIs up along side a direct recording in THIS thread, the difference was barely noticable and could have simply been the result of the reamped signal not hitting the amp with the same intensity as when it was directly in.

There should be no pussy complaining or whining or any issues with following the rules. Everyone has the same shit to work with, so either do it in silence, or fuggadeboutit.

Glad to hear this is finally on the move. I'm still up for doing the mix, provided there's time. My only concern is that most of the great players on here don't necessarily have a great DI chain, so while we'll get great performances, the DIs might have a flat and lifeless quality to them, which will kind of tie peoples' hands.

I have a solid DI box now, but I need to know what kind of clip would be wanted. You know, length and style. Just so I can make sure I can deliver. That is if anyone wanted me to even do the DI's haha. I think Ola would do some great stuff, but thats probably bc I think Ola is the shit!:kickass:

8 string, 5 minute dissonant breakdown. I'll push the bass guitar down to 30hz so you'll have space to work.

I'm down to do DI's as well, my schedule should clear up by then and I've got some sick riffs that haven't been properly recorded yet!

I think everyone's heard my DI's and can agree that the playing/signal chain quality won't be holding anyone's reamps back, aside from making them all sound like me.
