HEADPHONES!!!!

Third day in, and I already received a compliment on the Stephen Hawkings. I was in the drive-thru of El Pollo Loco, when the cashier asks, "hey man where did you get those headphones, they're pretty slick?" We then confabulated for a few minutes, denouncing earbuds as shite, and exalting retro portable devices to the high heavens.

They are probably going to get them for all the drive thru employees. That was the manager.

The sr80 is the absolute best value for any headphone period.

Blown the fuckkkkk away on my first listen. Open>Closed, felt like I was at a gig with the cleanest, clearest, sound imaginable. The SENN HD-280s have nothing on this set, and will only be used in situations where I wish to block out my surroundings. For actual music listening, Grado reigns supreme. This was through my discman mind you, so I'm hoping I can achieve even more oomph through my stereo receiver to power the headphones drives and all that other doohickey. I removed the stock cushions, and added these bad boys.

This is a pretty cool review on the set, from a real human being, not an audiophile fart.

haha

im glad you dig em Jerry. I have to buy myself another pair then send my old pair to dorian.

I'm honestly considering returning them to Amazon, and upgrading to the sr-225i's, that's how much I enjoyed these things. From everything I've read over the past week, this model is considered the sweet spot in terms of performance per peso.

Aye. But not as badly as one would imagine. It's not as if you would be disturbing the misses if you were listening to the latest Slayer opus, as she was quietly doing patchwork in the corner of your NYC studio loft. Open is definitely the way to go, far more natural sounding. You could hear colors and sizes and shit.

thanks ... and also, since I didn't receive an answer first time around ... doesn't the source you plug phones in play a HUGE part of what comes out of them. no offense to Jerry but an old school discman powered by 2AA batteries should sound different than a home stereo?
i might have to drive to Brooklyn and snap a pair of 80's now from Grado himself ... damn you guys.

yes, absolutely. thats why there are headphone amps galore. it depends on the phone too though. For instance, higher impedance phones are harder to drive and youll ABSOLUTELY need an amp to deliver the goods or youll get a flat sound and not enough volume. Most (read: all) stereo receivers have terrible headphone sections though. Not like the old days. However, the grados are extremely easy to drive and sound fine out of an ipod.

thanks ... i can imagine since they are open air they must be super sensitive.
my situation sucks in some ways as the only time I would listen to them is when I am on my pc at home late nights ... and even then i mostly watch flicks, etc.

really I should invest in my car stereo more than anywhere else.
