How about a friendly guitar tone competition?

Cool..thanks! I likely won't mess with velocities much at all for the drums, unless there are parts that sounds like total ass without tweaking. Is this okay?

Yeah, totally, keep it consistent! And if you haven't listened to the DI's, it's just the main riff from the song (about 1 1/2 minutes in) repeated once, so it's not like you'll need to do much ;)

The only tricky part is going to be getting the drum file tempo to match...I believe the Guitar Pro file I pulled the midi from was mapped at 90bpm, which is half time. Since you recorded at 170, I'll change the tempo to 85...that should work fine.

Just an FYI, I probably won't have the files ready until 11pm CDT tonight after I get home from band rehearsal.

skip to the end for a summary

You can count me in!! Although I can't mic my 6505+, I can use either Impulses or Palmer Pdi-03

Consider yourself in. Impulses will be just fine, it looks like thats what most people will be using :kickass:

I think they should all be in the same thread, regardless of the methods used. It's all about the tone, and we may see some people getting better results using just impulses than those actually micing up an amp.

I will most likely make it one thread with several rounds, or several threads each having one round. It depends on the final number of participants. I personally don't think its all that important how the tone is achieved...its the end result that matters so I don't think I'll make two seperate categories. I can give a few different awards though. We'd have an all around winner...and we'd have the best impulse/best original recording etc. Depends on the scoring system I'll be using.

If I'm making a thread per round, I can just use the thread polls. If we do several rounds in one thread...people are probably going to have to pm me or post the amount of points they award to the clips or something. Again, this will depend on the final number of participants. Once we have the backing track + DI in order, I will close the applications and work on the specifics of scoring, rounds and all that goodness. It'll come, and I'll make it work.

cool beans

I've got the midi files for the drums of this song. I can import the file into Reason and use my tweaked Jocke Skog kit for the drums. I also have a midi bass file that I can through into Reason and get a decent sound for the purpose of this test. I'll post the links once I get them renderred.

Awesome. Once we have a bassline and drumline to match Marcus his DI's we'll be good to go! If I can get the bassline and drumline this friday, I'll close participant entry on Monday. Then everyone will have one week to get their shit together and email me the end result. In other words:

If I have the DI's, Drums and Bass Friday:
Last day to enter: Sunday
Deadline to submit the recordings to me: Next sunday
I will make the competition thread: Monday after

I will be PMing everyone who entered with all the needed data and soundfiles so everyone who entered will know whats up.

Actually, I think I personally would wanna pass on having a bass track in there; some might say the most important thing is how it sounds in a full mix, whereas others would say it should just be the guitars by themselves (or just one guitar), but personally I like just guitars and drums as something of a middle ground. And I hear ya about the tone being all that matters, but the issue is that if you have all of them in one thread, that's like 20+ options to choose from, and no fucking way would I listen to all those if I were in the position of a voter! Maybe divide it randomly into rounds (round 1, round 2, etc.), and then the winners from each round would go into the finals, and so on (all the while with no one except the thread creater, I guess it'd be Mark, knowing who made what clip, cuz it'd be blind)

Either several threads each being a round...or several rounds in one thread. Don't worry, you won't have to vote on 20+ tracks in one go. Besides, that would mean its over too fast...like 10 second masturbation. The number of rounds/threads will depend on the number of participants. Don't worry I'll make this work.

I personally think drums + bass would be best. However, I can offer them seperately to the participants so they can choose for themselves how they want to present their guitar tone.

I will keep track of all the clips and who made them. Most likely I'll have everyone send me their entry, with their username in the filename. I will then copy and rename, and label them A or B or whatever and upload them for voters. I'll keep track of which track was made by who. Unless someone doesn't trust me, then I guess we can make it public. I think keeping the maker a secret would be better though.

I`d like to take part in this as well
If it`s not too late, count me in!

In short

If Brett can get me the Drum track and Bass track this friday 17, sunday 19 will be the last day to enter the competition. Sunday the 25th will be the deadline to submit your work to me. In other words, you have one week from the application deadline. You can pm me with a link to your files, or email me at cabal000@hotmail.com. You can send me a link, but I would prefer if you email me the actual files. Please put your username in the file name! Also let me know if it is an original recording, or if you used the supplied DI files. Make sure you get your files to me before Monday the 26th.

For those of you too lazy to check out this thread, no worries. I will PM all participants with the needed DI and backing files, along with instructions and deadlines.

I will work out exactly how to do the voting process once I have all the files, so I know how many rounds etc. will be needed. It looks like there will be several rounds where the winner will go on to the next round. This will most likely be a new thread per round since I can then put a poll in the first post. However, if you guys prefer it I can also just make a single thread, where you vote by posting. This will be a closed competition though. I will keep track of who made which track, and then post up the creators at the end. This way you can't go OMG Goddamn Guitar made that one, so it must be the best.

At the end when we have a winner...I will announce who made that particular file. I will also post up honorable mentions such as best impulse recording, best original recording.

Before I forget...a big thanks to Marcus for making the DI's and a big thanks to Brett for making the drums + bass tracks. Also many thanks to Opeth57 for offering his band material! I'd also like to thank my mother for giving birth to me, couldn't have done it without her!

i'll give it a go, practice cant hurt:rock:

I had to create the drum beat from scratch, as the midi file I had was completely lame, and wrong. It may not be exactly like the song, but it's close and should work fine for the purpose of the thread.

Also, I trimmed a bit of silence at the beginning and the end of Marcus's DI's a hair so that it syncs right up with the beat and both can be easily looped together to extend the time of the test....Mark has the links to the files.

I have not had time to tweak the Bass DI's...maybe later today after I get off of work.

Thanks again Brett, I really appreciate it. I'm downloading the files now, and I'll put them up here in a package once I have everything.

*edit*

Here is a quick preview. I used the drums and trimmed DI racks I received from Brett. I just slapped a quick SoloC on it for you guys to get an idea. Didn't want to mess around with it...since that could be considered as extra practice for me and I don't want to create an unfair advantage.

Sounds to me like those drums will work just fine! Can't wait for the bass line from Brett, and we'll be good to go. I'm not 100% sure yet if we'll use the bass...since it already sounds pretty good without. I'll give it a listen once I get it, then decide what to do.

I think we should have bass, as some people will overcompensate for the low end on the guitars if there is no bass there, and that can scew the results. I'll fuck around with the midi bass track and see if I can get a good, usable bass sound...if not, then I'll just record the bass DI myself using my Deluxe Jazz Bass. Problem is, I won't have my real bass until Sunday (it's at rehearsal space).

I think I should be able to get a pretty convincing bass tone using the midi file, though.
