How about a friendly guitar tone competition?

But I must say(since I can't reamp) that I rather learn a passage or riff and record it if you guys are up to it. Isn't 50% of the sound from your fingers?

Learn what you will, its a guitar tone competition and I never specified the means to achieve the tone. Di's will be supplied for those who don't have the means to record, but sure if you can actually play and record it yourself it could well sound better (depending on your gear and playing). In your case, we would be fucked.

What are the odds of sneaping dropping by to supply a killer backingtrack and DI's?

:loco:

Hey guys, I recorded some DI's tonight that I'm gonna re-amp tomorrow (just the main riff to Opeth's "Blackwater Park"), but I thought they might be good for reference DI's, since I used a good guitar (Ibanez Prestige RGA321), good pickup (EMG 81), and a good DI box (Little Labs Redeye) - and I'd like to think I'm a good player too :D Here's a link!

And if someone could program drums for the beat of that song (cuz I honestly much prefer judging guitar tones with at least drums accompanying them), that'd be great too!

Well I recorded at 170 bpm, that was the tempo that ended up feeling right to me (though I didn't reference the song) - oh, and don't be alarmed, I'm tuned to C :D

Count me in as well. I could also provide backing tracks if needed. I can post a link to some quick mixes if interested. I do think that it would be better to use a forum members song rather than a well known song. People (at least me) may have a pre-conceived idea about what the guitars should sound like and we may not get the full range of tones. (hope that makes sense)

Hmm, you make a good point Jex - however, I for one really am not a fan of the tone on BWP, so I fully expect to come up with something better :D (IMO obviously)

You know, I have a love-hate relationship with BWP. I like the mid content of the guitars, but I think they should be low-cut at 500 hz and have another amp playing from 500hz to 80hz (in this case, I would have gone with something EL-34 driven).

To me, it sounds like exactly what it is; a huge amount of layered low-gain amps, so the tone ends up being unpleasantly "dense" in the upper mids to my ears, but still very unsaturated (the notes in that palm muted lick in "The Leper Affinity" have like ZERO sustain, always irks me).

And as for this thread, I think this would be really cool if the submissions were organized by whether a person mic'ed up a cab or used impulses (maybe two separate threads, each with a poll, and the tones would just be labeled A, B, C, etc., so people wouldn't have biases)

Sounds good to me, thats what I was thinking.

If we can get a good backing track together, that sounds fine to me! Already got decent sounds out of it with SoloC:D :kickass:

If we use these DI's you can make it into what you want it to be. Thanks for offering to program the drums too! If we can also get in a bass line on this, I think we're set.

I think they should all be in the same thread, regardless of the methods used. It's all about the tone, and we may see some people getting better results using just impulses than those actually micing up an amp.

I've got the midi files for the drums of this song. I can import the file into Reason and use my tweaked Jocke Skog kit for the drums. I also have a midi bass file that I can through into Reason and get a decent sound for the purpose of this test. I'll post the links once I get them renderred.

Actually, I think I personally would wanna pass on having a bass track in there; some might say the most important thing is how it sounds in a full mix, whereas others would say it should just be the guitars by themselves (or just one guitar), but personally I like just guitars and drums as something of a middle ground. And I hear ya about the tone being all that matters, but the issue is that if you have all of them in one thread, that's like 20+ options to choose from, and no fucking way would I listen to all those if I were in the position of a voter! Maybe divide it randomly into rounds (round 1, round 2, etc.), and then the winners from each round would go into the finals, and so on (all the while with no one except the thread creater, I guess it'd be Mark, knowing who made what clip, cuz it'd be blind)

Okay...I should have the drums for you guys tonight...I'll go ahead and have the bass track as a seperate file just in case someone wants it.

Edit: What's a good file hosting service for these files?
