How did you all get into Opeth?

Not here.
I heard Nectar on some century media sampler and immediately bought every one i could find, which was up through MAYH at the time, and got the other two as soon as they became available.

I was searching for bands similar to My Dying Bride on CDnow, and they had an Opeth clip. It was only 30 seconds of poor quality real audio, but I liked what I heard. A few weeks later, a friend let me listen to 'Nectar' on one of the Blackened compilations (I think) and confirmed that I had indeed found a band worthy of attention. I picked up Morningrise that week and immediately loved it, and after listening to it several times and buying the other albums that were out at the time (Orchid and MAYH), I bumped Opeth up into slot #1 for my favorite bands (usurping My Dying Bride)

A long time ago, I was on the Angra - Reaching Horizons mailing list with a dude named Fernando that had a site with all sorts of RealAudio prog metal songs. Well, he had all of To Bid You Farewell and I snagged it, because he said something to the effect that fans of Space Dye Vest (the Dream Theater song) would enjoy it. Well, I didn't like it at first and just let it sit there. Later I got the intro to Demon of the Fall and heard that. That's when I slowly started to get hooked (the best bands always start out subtle but somehow don't go away and creep up on you :)). I heard a couple more tunes courtesy of Century Media. Then I placed an order for Still Life and the rest is history.

My bestfriend/roommate played "To Bid You Farewell' one nite for me over the phone. I fell totally in love with Opeth. From then on I bothered him constantly about getting me Morningrise and he finally did. Now I own all of their cds plus 2 of their cds with the bonus tracks. Opeth seriously changed my outlook on music!

I heard Advent played on a local radio station just prior to the release of Morningrise. It was unlike anything I had ever heard. I then went out and bought Orchid and have hung out for every one of their releases since.....just like i'm hanging out for D & D now!

2 years ago, when Blackwater Park came out in Québec in my local store, there was this foggy, mysterious, hunting cover to say the least that grabed my attention in a way no other covers did before...Then, my friend Blackout and I was like: WOAH great cover, let's listen to it...We made a quick scan of the songs and we both feel it was ok music...but simply not the kind we expected. At that time, I was very new to the hole metal scene and I was listening to Rhapsody :)rolleyes: at that time, it was damn good, those guys played epic metal in a fantasy style with big swords :p) So 3 months later, fucking Blackwater Park went back in my head and I remembered the intro of Dirge For November I sampled and I was like...man the instrumental section is AWESOME...so I burn the entire Blackwater Park. When I heard the death vocals I said to myself that I didn't want those kind of brutal shit...so I made alot of scratch on it to see how a cd can be scratched until it doesn't play anyone in a cd player...yeah I really did this with Blackwater Park. Then, my taste in metal music got more and more underground and I was like...DAMN BLACKWATER PARK GET OUT OF MY MIND  so you guessed it, I finally bought my first Opeth's record which was Morningrise. I was shocked by the greatness of the compositions and the lyrics' genius...in two weeks, I had the entire Opeth discography :D

That was my little Opeth story...
thanks for reading!

I was into DM and I just wanna hear something new. So I decided to buy Blackwater Park 'coz a friend of mine said Opeth is somewhat special. When I went home and heard the album, I was hooked. the next week, I bought Morningrise and god, that gave a new meaning in my life. then week after week, I bought all their albums. I've been an Opeth slave since then.

I saw an ad for Blackwater Park on the back of a metal magazine and read about them in my guitar player magazine so I decided to check them out. I bought Orchid and I loved it.

My Roommate pretty much said hey check these guys out, and i thought they were ok... then i bought an album to see if they could hold up for an album or if it was just that one song... My Arms, Your Hearse kicked soooo much ass that I have been in love with them ever since

About two years ago, I was looking for new bands to listen to. I guess I just wanted to broaden my horizons. I've always been into bands like Megadeth, Alice In Chains, Stabbing Westward and Tool, each for their own unique qualities that I greatly enjoyed. However, at the same time, I refused to believe there weren't more bands out there that I would really enjoy and be inspired by.

I started reading reviews in different metal websites and threads in different message boards to try to find new artists. I downloaded different tracks to see what I liked, and I think the first one I downloaded by Opeth was "Black Rose Immortal"... talk about an eye opener! I had never heard a song like this, and I was floored by it! I didn't like the growled vocals at first, but I thought the music was amazing. After that, I downloaded "White Cluster" and "Bleak" and went out to purchase any Opeth cds I could get my hands on. The only one I could find that day was Blackwater Park, but since then I've bought Still Life, Morningrise and Orchid - the latter two being very hard to find.

Opeth is the most incredible band I've ever heard. I mean I know there's bands out there that may have better singers, guitar players, and more talent in general... but on a personal level, I just happen to enjoy their songs much more. Also, I don't find any of their stuff boring, but maybe that's just me. Someone could bitch and call me some fanboy or whatever, but I could care less. I love their music and that's as far as it goes. I don't worship them as people, nor do I consider myself to be above those that don't enjoy their music and might see it as boring. Besides, I don't see anything wrong with expressing your fondness of someone's music on their message board.

Sucking up is a bad thing, but honestly sharing your opinion is definitely not something that should be frowned upon.

Well shit, I like Opeth like a 12 year old girl likes the backstreet boys and I'm not at all afraid to admit that.:D

But honestly, I wholeheartedly agree with this statement:

I mean I know there's bands out there that may have better singers, guitar players, and more talent in general... but on a personal level, I just happen to enjoy their songs much more.

They may not be the most technical band ever, but they're certainly technically proficient, but I think Opeth is to music now what I would imagine Bob Dylan was to lyrics back in his day. Opeth has great lyrics, but even disregarding the lyrics, they write the best songs in my opinion.

I bought Still Life out of curiosity. At first, I listened a bit into the first three tracks or so...but I really didn't like the death vocals(I was listening to "normal" stuff at that time), and the music seemed too complicated and strange. So I didn't like it all. That's why the CD then was lying somewhere in my cd rack, for over one year. Every 2 or 3 months I pulled out the CD and tried it again, but no success. In late 2000, I think, was the first time I listened to The Moor from beginning to end, and then again, and again...then the other tracks...until I realized that it's really great music. In the following 2 or 3 weeks I got the 3 other CDs from Ebay. And BWP, as soon as it was out, of course.
now, opeth is clearly my favourite band. funny, if you remember I didn't really listen to them although I had Still Life for over one year...

I downloaded a few mp3's from Morningrise through Napster, and the very first time I listened to it I was interested and finally hooked. The very first thing that drew my attention was the twin guitar lines.

Then I bought MAYH, downloaded all of Morningrise, bought Still Life and Orchid and finally BWP, and then fiiiinally bought Morningrise. Twice., no three times, cause I gave one copy away as a present.
