how many albums do you have in your music collection?

you're right about something nfu, namely that I don't have a leg to stand on in the MORAL debate

but I'm not attempting to justify it, because I don't care, so all of these points (which are absolutely trite, look up the word) are basically moot

so you never answered my question? How many of those albums do you actually own? Im guessing from your silence, the figure is 0...

Personally I think having like 100 cds and 1000 burned mp3 albums is pretty weak. Burning albums to check a band out is perfectly cool, but there's a point where you're just freeloading.

Thing is, with your argument being that anyone can download, I would be even less impressed with some rich kid who just buys every album in a record store. With confinements like these it will just end up as "how many good albums have you bought?", which will obviously be incredibly flawed.
Also, this thread is hardly a place to gain or lose respect for people. I don't give a fuck how many albums somebody owns, and it's all alright if you're just curious, but if you are going to pick fault and complain then you're just too caught up in something so petty as wanting to own more albums than somebody else.

well said.

actually when i asked how many albums you own, that was *supposed* to mean downloaded to. buying or downloaded, it still comes down to the same thing: listening to music.

mp3's are LAME.

I mean I have tons of those in my office , but they were ripped from actual CD's.

Owning an MP3 without owning the CD is LAME imo, but i don't care, do whatever you want!
Actually, mp3's or some variation should be used much more in the future as the standard format for music. Cd's IMO are getting to be too inconvenient especially with mp3 players nowadays being more popular and also cd's are actually becoming to bulky, just as (lp) records were back in the day. And soon, hopefully, most music will be distributed in digital form. It's inevitable, anyone not willing to keep up with the new technology will just have to find what music that they can on cd which will probably be limited. And if you are calling mp3's lame, it's much more lame imo to be walking around in a grocery store with a fucking huge cd player in your hands than with an mp3 player in your pants/shirt pocket with 1000's of songs on it.

He was obviously talking about just downloading mp3s, not about *buying* mp3s. There is nothing morally or legally wrong with having a huge collection of mp3s if you bought them obviously. Though personally I don't see the appeal in that at all. It'll be a cold day in hell before I start buying my music in digital file form.

^+1

"Digital" music sucks imo, it should be just an easy way of carrying your music around with you, not the format on which music should be distributed.

Let's put it this way: YOu have a nice lady that you love, and sometimes you miss her and would like her to be with you always. So, you carry a nice picutre of her in your wallet, but you stlll know she's at home, the real thing, waiting for you. The picture makes the relationship easier, but you're not going to date a photograph.

As far as practical use goes, I definitely agree with you. Howerver, I would say that people who satisfy themselves with the average 128kbps mp3s have pretty low standard when it comes to the listening experience. Not only the quality is poor, but they're left with an incomplete, fragmented part of the artist's work. Music [by itself] isn't the whole of a work. The experience peaks when many senses are participating: contemplating the coverart in all its glory / reading the lyrics, holding the booklet and feeling its texture, smelling the freshly printed paped and, of course, listening to the music. A plain mp3 can't provide such a rich experience, ever. Ultimately, it is just a question of whether or not you place quality over convenience.

Also, if you are buying second hand, you are not supporting the artist at all.

You do, indirectly. As NFU pointed out, it is a question of ownership. In that case, the artist got the money for one album sold; only the ownership moved from one to another.

i dont know if i entirely agree with that. many said the same thing about newspapers, but theres probably always going to be people who want to sit down and relax and read the newspaper in the morning over a cup of coffee. Same way there will always be those people who want to go to a record store and buy a hard copy of an album and take it home with them. Pride of ownership has a lot to do with the arts and any sort of creative medium, because its obviously more personal than a lot of things. People will always want to go go the movies as well, even though you technically could download movies too. CDs replaced LPs and Casettes MORE for manufacturers reasons anyway from what i have read and know. Digital technology was there, but CDs were also cheaper to produce, more compact, and essentially didnt wear out or damage as easily as vinyl LPs did. It killed many birds with one stone.

I agree 100%

Cd's are not going to be replaced anytime soon with another format.

Btw, my cd player fits into any pocket i choose. I don't know how people can be satisfied with listening to 128kps (or worseas ive seen many people do) mp3's all day long with those shitty little ear pieces that come with Ipods. Give me a real CD with my Sennheiser HD 25's anyday. Now thats a great combination for a musical experience.
