i miss mike's shittier clean

i agree, i just miss the, how the other guy said, "haunted quality" he used to have. technically he's much better now obviously. i didnt say it was better, i just said its something that i miss:rolleyes:

well then which is it? make up your mind. if u miss them, then you want them back. thats not very progressive.

Then learn to word your posts better. Asshole.

Unnecessary.

I think I know what you mean. More technically better doesn't mean that it sounds better to each individual. While I disagree with you, I still see what you're saying.

Music is not sports. If I practise football and get better technically, I'm a better football-player. Yet, if I practice my guitar, I'll get better on a technical level, but I will not necessarily become a better songwriter.

@lothlorien: i guess they wouldnt fit ws as good.. mike owns anyway so i guess i dont mind. even though i dont think ws includes any of my favorite clean opeth sections (which are the part before demon of the fall outro, the "leave it be" on fair and a lot more)

@dante: yep

you guys are talking about "progression" and "progressive" ...
i mean ... progression doesnt mean that you always get BETTER AND BETTER. where would pink floyd be today, if it was so?
why is still life opeths best album, when there were 5 albums released after it? this cant be progressioN! ... oh dude

he is just saying that HE(!) misses the old singing style from mike ... and i cant deny that i miss them too ! whats wrong with that?..
they are much more melodic and "epic". thats the truth .. why is everyone hyping watershed? i mean is a 10/10 - great album, and the clean singing fits good in it. BUT the singing on the other albums isnt even better .. it just SOUNDS! better. you see the little difference?

Technically, Akerfeldt has become a much better singer than ever before, and yes he does sound great. His pitch changes are far smoother, and he's using his registers much better than before.

HOWEVER!!! - he doesn't sound as natural as he did before. Much of the singing on the new album, while great, sounds unnatural, or almost, too perfect. His increased technical vocal ability has detracted from his ability to express character imo. Additionally, his increased technical abilities have also detracted from the uniqueness of his delivery. He now just sounds like a "really good singer" as opposed to "Mikael Akerfeldt the guy who can do insane DM growls AND sing really well".

I really like the improved cleans. His voice gets better on every album, look at Orchid to Morningrise.

I wish Watershed had a bit more growling, but Heir Apparent makes up for that.

I enjoy the cleans too.

Hey Hubster, I see what you mean, though do not necessarily agree with it. Judging by what you wrote, you must be a bigger fan of the first three discs, right?

Well, probably the first 4 overall, especially MAYH and SL. I find the first two albums, while great, to be very experimental and disjointed.

actually i find i also miss the haunted quality of his old singing, although i also love his new singing, but it only makes sense that after years of singing.......he would get better at it

I think in the old days, as he wasn't the greatest singer, he would rely on the pure emotion in his voice to get the point across. That is something that I miss. The fragility of the soft singing in Still Life in contrast with the anger of the growls is a large part of what made that album what it is. MAYH was the same, to an even greater degree.
It seems that as he becomes a better vocalist, Mikael keeps discovering new ways to sing, which sometimes lessens the overwhelming depression that was found in his more subdued voice on the early albums. For comparitive context, imagine if Jonas Renske suddenly started singing notes like Mikael does when he sings 'I, once upon a tiiiiiiiiiime' on Burden. Katatonia just wouldn't be the same.

Still, Coil, Burden, and Hessian Peel would just not work with the 'shittier' vocals. The band has moved on from those days.

I don't I think agree with that (even though I see your point). I haven't heard Watershed yet, but in the last couple of albums, Mikael sounds like he's singing his heart out. That's my opinon though.

The girl who sings on the first song of Watershed is amazing. Has she done anything else?
