I think they should give up metal. A mainstream prog band is better than a mainstream metal band any day of the week. Plus Damnation is better than Deliverence and if the grand conjuration is any indication it seems like that's the style they've begun to settle into.

Just a thought. I'd much prefer several albums in the style of Damnation to several in the style of deliverence. Actually I might just prefer several prog-like Opeth albums regardless. Metal is getting lame anyway.

A man can dream...

You mean mainstream like Porcupine Tree? Ehh, we have bands like them already, (Porcupine Tree - Blackfield) !

^Not really. They are on the edge in Europe. Nothing like, say Rush. The only problem with Opeth becoming pure prog-rock is that Mike obviously lives and breathes fucking metal, so if they ever were to become a prog band, I doubt Mike (or Peter for that matter) would be involved.

I don't appreciate any side more than the others. The dynamics of Opeth are like the light and darkness. They wouldn't be if it wasn't for the other. I like the entire Opeth formula, not just individual styles. That's what attracted me to the band in the first place.

But the hilarious harlequin segments on Orchid are probably the best style Opeth have. Come on, everybody agrees on that.

lol... i love how all these people are thinking the whole fucking album is going to sound like TGC.... mikael already said there is stuff like damnation, wierd progressive stuff like pink floyd, etc...

I never said the whole thing would sound like the grand conjuration, I was just making an observation.

And yes, I meant like Rush(or even pinkfloyed) when I said mainstream but I definitely didn't mean that's how I want them to sound. I just mean I prefer the prog side to the metal side these days.

Camel > morbid angel.

I wish people would stop saying mainstream, they're not even close.
for one, death vocals are not in mainstream music. two, Opeth writes their own music and plays the instruments. three, they are not on fm radio stations etc....
Metal is getting lame anyway? :erk: sounds like a poser to me...

Opeth could easily be mainstream. True, bands with pure cookie mostor vox don't get mainstream radio airplay. However, with this metal core, nu metal and hardcore trend becoming mainstream in heavy music, barking, growling vocals are far more accepted than before. Along with the more melodic Gothenburgh ("death metal") bands crossing over, yeh, bands like Opeth (with clean vocals as well) are becoming more mainstream. Melodic death metal has ALREADY crossed over since the turn of the new millineum replacing nu metal right along the lines of the metal core (ATG ripp off bands) and hardcore bands. All those bands are performing on the most mainstream heavy music fests that the USA has to offer.
Yeh, Opeth are going mainstream, like it or not.
