Even if it meant keeping Mayhem a good band, I wouldn't want every single black metal band to sound like Mayhem just because Euronymous said it should sound that way in order to be true black metal. It was a tragedy that he died, but without his guidance in a single direction, black metal was able to branch out in so many different directions, and not stay true to one sound, which gets boring you know.
