Have they gone as far as they can? Is there anything left for them to see, to write? Can they become any more popular?

Opeth isn't going anywhere.

The biggest problem Opeth has right now is that they have unintentionally acquired a lot of new fans who are basically stupid little Korn kids that think listening to Opeth makes them cool. "Oh, I'm listening to 'progressive death metal' from Sweden!!" And to make it worse, the little shits then proceed to sit at their computers dissecting Opeth's music as if they write for Rolling Stone. I hope the next Opeth record is so black metal that all those little AFI-lyric-analyzing cunts can't stand it.

I really don't think that happens.

I agree. Recently while wearing an Opeth shirt, some little freak bastard working in a 7/11 commented on it. "WOW-YOU LIKE OPETH? THEY ARE THE BALLS" He went on and on about how they are his favorite band blah, blah, blah. If he wasn't wearing a Linkin Park shirt I might have actually said something other than "I'll take one pack of Camel Menthol Lights please"...
