Can Opeth get any bigger?

I really dont know. Define bigger first. more fans? sure, why not? bigger as in more mainstream? I hope not if that means that getting rid of that brutal grunt and "7 minutes or more" songs. But for them I would like to see more fans: bigger venues and gigs. I truly love their music and I would like to share that with many more people without having the band to lose their magic.
did I make any sense?

You made sense to me. I love Opeth and I try to share their music with those people who have a similar taste in music. I gave my brother in law some Opeth, I haven't heard back from him, but I think he will like it.

Good thread.

They can get bigger, in my opinion, and have done so with the past 2 albums by (a) a more accessible sound and (b) marketing. Now it's only a matter of magnitude.

I think they have reached their popularity level...but if Akerfeldt,Wilson,Portonoy trio happens it will be HUGE...maybe im just dreaming.
As far as Mendez, ive asked this ques. before and never got an answer. Heard rumors that he was on heroin and it wasnt anxiety etc...any truth to that??

I guess you mean Lopez. well, I've wondered and am still a little skeptical considering the story i've been told... but this guy I kinda know who's in the business said Lopez is a hardcore heroin addict, couldn't handle it anymore. and that Mike and Peter are cokeheads. so given that, I don't know. :erk:

I think that Opeth can get bigger but it will never be mainstream because of the DM vocals and some of the best riffs ever which are to heavy for the mainstream. Yes Damnation was a change of style but it worked extremely well for them and they still maintained their underground status. Even now after the release of GR a lot of people I've spoken to who are into metal have never heard of Opeth (which is bad but still it shows that Opeth are'nt turning mainstream)

There is a variety of things that obviously couldn't allow them to become very mainsteam unpredictable, DM vocals, long songs and being very unique. The only way they could would be if they changed around all those things. They have the talent to be massive, but I highly doubt they will change in those ways. In Oz they have grown in popularity heaps. Back in the times of Blackwater hardly anyone knew who they were and at the 03 gigs, it was mainly made up of true fans who appreciated the band for their brilliance. Now it seems there are people who like Opeth because it's "cool" to do so. When I wear my GR shirt, I now get lots of shitkicker kids who are like "ghost reveries man! Satan!". People who like Opeth for all the wrong reasons are very anoying. In the metal world there is still room for them to get bigger, even if people don't understand or appreciate Opeth for what I think are the right reasons, if they keep releasing very high quality albums they will become even bigger in the metal world. But in mainstream music, never, as long as they don't change. Same thing is happening to Porcupine Tree, they are now becoming more internationally known, I'm more worried about them becoming mainstream, their music is easier to digest for a mainstream audience.

Well you're about the 10th person who heard that Lopez is a heroin addict and I believe it...but as far as Mikael and Peter being cokeheads? Not believing that one. If you remember Mikael on the GR dvd he admits to smokin reefer and drinking every now and then and thats all, and drugs are offered to even them all the time.

And now everyone who reads your post will also be someone who has "heard that Lopez is a heroin addict". Does that make the statement more true? Obviously not. I'd prefer everyone STFU about rumors and Innuendo concerning such a sensitive and potentially damning subject unless you are speaking from first-hand experience as your evidence for making such statements.

Settle down and dig the thong out of your asscrack...
I am saying I believe it. period. People have minds of their own. What, you think there's bunch of easily influenced 13 yr. old's on this thread? I think not.

Well I wasn't speaking to you directly, but ok... you now have my direct attention. I franlky don't care what you believe. You're entitled to believe whatever you want. I am however concerned with what is typed on the Offiicial Opeth Forum. When all else is lost, the only thing a man has is his reputation. I have no idea if there is any shred of truth to what you're saying and therefore it's highly irresponsible of me to allow such things to be spread. I do however have information straight from the band regarding Lopez's illness and there has NEVER been mention of what you "believe".

And what does the age of the forum membership have to do with anything? Even though the "thong out of your asscrack" comment sounded like it came from a 13 year old, I'm guessing you are not 13... and yet you seem quite confident in what you "believe". Are you old enough to understand the damage one can do with repeated, "well, I heard that "blank" is "blank" over and over?
