It's 2008. Post your top 10 2007 lists here.

For chuckles and grins, I created an iTunes Smartlist, to show what I've listened to on my iPod, using the following rules:

Date Added - is after - 10/1/2006 - since I often get releases months before their release date, I didn't want to lose 2007 releases that leaked prior to 2007
Play Count - is greater than - 3 - just to minimize what I had to weed through
Track Number - is greater than - 4 - as some of you are aware, I have a short attention span. I wanted to discount those releases that couldn't hold my attention

So here's how it broke down, in order from most plays to least plays...

Swallow the Sun - Hope
Circus Maximus - Isolate
Riverside - Rapid Eye Movement
Kamelot - Ghost Opera
Primordial - To the Nameless Dead
Kiko Loureiro - Universo Inverso
Novembers Doom - The Novella Reservoir
CircleIICircle - Burden of Proof
Symphony X - Paradise Lost
Iced Earth - Framing Armageddon

Unfortunately, this system doesn't represent my Top 10. Not even close. For starters, there are certain styles of music I listen to predominantly on my iPod, and others I listen to predominantly in the car. For instance, Power Metal is almost exclusively for the car. This drastically minimized where Iced Earth, Pagan's Mind and Redemption will finish. In addition, my "short attention span" rule created a serious problem; Drudkh's Estrangement, Darkestrah's Epos, October Falls The Streams Of The End, and Mgla's Furher Down the Nest/Mdlosci failed to qualify, as they all contain fewer than five tracks. All would have finished in my Top 10. There were also three aberrations:

Swallow the Sun - listened to this incessantly, just prior to seeing them. Not bad, but it won't finish in my Top 10.
Kamelot - I actually don't care for this disc at all. I just kept being convinced to revisit it.
CircleIICircle - I was surprised to see how much I spun this. I believe I owe these guys a purchase.

Awesome.

Date Added - is after - 10/1/2006 - since I often get releases months before their release date, I didn't want to lose 2007 releases that leaked prior to 2007

yeah, for me, I ran a few different reports on my database, including "number of plays of 2007 releases played IN 2007" and "number of plays of 2007 releases played at any time". For some reason I posted the first list, but on the second list, Therion's 'Gothic Kabbalah' appears at #5 or something, because I listened to that a lot when it leaked in late 2006.

So what are your actual numbers for these albums? I'm always curious about this because I don't think people know too much about the listening patterns of others. For example, in another thread, swizzlenuts just mentioned that he's recently listened to some album 15 times. As you can see, there's not a single album I listened to that many times in the whole year.

And yeah, it's annoying how iTunes's track-based approach prevents you from automatically getting data like "album plays". That's why I need to have my scripts calculate the average for me: (total number of plays of songs from that album) / (number of tracks on the album). But I generally listen to albums the whole way through, so simply selecting "Track Number - is equal to - 1" is a good enough approximation when I'm just working within iTunes and want a rough idea.

For starters, there are certain styles of music I listen to predominantly on my iPod, and others I listen to predominantly in the car.

Ah, yes, you already have a great start towards heavy-metal nerd-dom, now you just have to finish the job! Convert that car to play music from your iPod, and your problem is solved!

Are you using something other than iTunes as your DB?

So what are your actual numbers for these albums?

Wow.

It would be very cool to have that kind of data. And I actually owned an Alpine, which was the first car stereo maker to have an integrated iPod interface (connected through the USB, not the headphone jack). However, when I played iPod and the same music from the real CD, the difference was very noticeable.

Are you using something other than iTunes as your DB?

Sort of. iTunes forms the root of my database, but its play-tracking isn't detailed enough for my nerd-needs (it only keeps the total number of plays and the LAST played timestamp, not a record of ALL the timestamps). So I made an iTunes plug-in that writes the timestamp, track name, and other info into an XML file for every track I play. Then I periodically combine that play-information XML along with the basic iTunes Library XML file into a SQL database, which allows me to then run all sorts of reports on what I've listened to, and when. As an added bonus, that database exists online, so it's easy to make it double as an automated web-based display of my collection.

So with that, I can find out that in 2007, only 5 of my top 10 most-listened-to albums were released in 2007, or that, over the last two years taken together, I only have two metal albums in my top 10 (Disillusion - Gloria, and Agalloch - Ashes Against The Grain).

Anyhow, it looks like your top stuff probably got a little more listening than mine did, since those numbers presumably don't include all of your plays? I listened to 19,000+ songs this year, so I don't think it's a lack of listening on my part, but I might continue listening to old stuff more than other people do. But since you're only the third person I've seen with actual data, I'm not quite ready to publish any theories yet! But thanks for posting it.

However, when I played iPod and the same music from the real CD, the difference was very noticeable.

Huh. That's unfortunate, and stupid.

According to last.fm, which only records while I'm at my computer, I average around 50 songs per day.

1. Blotted Science - Machinations of Dimentia, The
2. Sleepytime Gorilla Museum - In Glorious Times
3. In Vain - The Latter Rain
4. Upsilon Acrux - Galapagos Momentum
5. Indricothere - Indricothere
6. Townsend, Devin - Ziltoid the Omniscient
7. Direwolf - Beyond the Lands of Human Existence
8. Behold... the Arctopus - Skullgrid
9. Anekdoten - Time of Day, A
10. Canvas Solaris - Cortical Tectonics

5 instrumental discs out of 10. This year rules. Good thing you didn't ask for top 20, I haven't worked that out yet.

Whoa, calc.exe tells me that makes 52 songs each day. I don't know about the other people here, but to me that sounds like very much. But perhaps I'm just a wuss

Or perhaps you don't listen to enough grindcore!

Well, neither do I, but I listen to music all day at work, so that helps a lot. Of course, then "listen" is a relative term, since occasionally I actually pay more attention to what I'm working on than the music playing. No, sorry, I'm not going to factor that into my calculations. Geez, what kind of dork do you think I am?

But again, it's nice to hear some more opinions/data indicating whether that's a lot or not.

what i've properly digested, in a general sort of order:
deathspell omega - fas ite maledicti
municipal waste - the art of partying
wolves in the throne room - two hunters
pig destroyer - phantom limb
insect warfare - world extermination
drudkh - estrangement

really haven't heard these enough yet but they're all legitimate contenders:
impaled - the last gasp
belenos - chemins de souffrance
primordial - to the nameless dead
skeletonwitch - beyond the permafrost
magrudergrind - rehashed
leviathan - the blind wound

k, chaosmoon "languor into echoes, beyond" (which makes up for the ridiculous "are you sure you're a native english speaker?" title with some pretty neato cover art) is hands-down top 5. i can't remember the last time i've been so instantly struck by an album from a band totally new to me.

impaled: decent, but a step down from the last one which fuckin röx...this one won't make the list

belenos and primordial: v good but not the best of the year

skeletonwitch: thrashtastically gaymazing

magrudergrind and leviathan: daggit i don't listen to my vinyl enough...

also forgot about shining, which is pretty goot but i liked the last one more in this case too...

Tentative Final Top 10 omg
1. Deathspell Omega - Fas, Ite, Et Cetera
2. Municipal Waste - The Art Of Partying
3. Chaosmoon - Languor Into Echoes, Beyond
4. Wolves In The Throne Room - The Two Hunters
5. Pig Destroyer - Phantom Limb
6. Skeletonwitch - Beyond The Permafrost
7. Primordial - To The Nameless Dead
8. Insect Warfare - World Extermination
9. Drudkh - Estrangement
10. Belenos - Chemins de Souffrance

i need to listen to belenos more and that one could jump higher. wolves perhaps as well.

i feel like a bunch of bands failed to stack up to their last releases..."phantom limb", "estrangement", "the last gasp", "halmstad", "the blind wound", and even "the art of partying" which comes pretty close, all come up a bit short compared to their immediate antecedents...not to mention "defective epitaph" and "red album" which were more significant steps down. granted, "terrifyer", "blood in our wells" and "hazardous mutation" are hands-fucking-down top 10 albums for me, so i can't complain much. it was a good year, maybe these releases just need to age a bit for me.

edit: wow no death metal this year, all black, grind, and thrash.....somebody needs to get me some asskickin 2007 death metal, stat

the samples on the myspace are pretty fucking ace, sucks they're just samples though...hint?

interesting, it says that album is a 2006 release? was it 2007 north 'mer'ca?

edit: nm, metal archives sez 2007. IT HAS BEEN SPOKEN
