Of course not, but the difference is that allied forces aren't attacking innocent civillians, in fact the aid that is sent from western countries saves more lives and sustains more innocent Afghans than the Taliban ever did. And the Taliban killed many many more of it's own innocent civilians than the allied forces have or will. Of course it's tragic loss of life, but the Taliban were repeatedly told to give up a terrorist who has stated his intentions to kill many many thousands more all over the civilised world simply because they don't share his religious views. Something had to be done, not just as retribution for 09/11, but to make sure it doesn't happen again and again. War wasn't the only way, but the Taliban made it the only way. (probably not the forum to start this discussion, sorry)

Of course they are not. I don't think it's justified to act after the old "eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth"-principle. Each and every war is to avoid. But don't blame only the US-government. If there weren't the lots of US-citizens demanding revenge, Bush wouldn't have to do what he does.
