...if they had maintained the direction they did with RIP. too bad dave got sober and mellowed out. he was one of the best thrash metal guitarist ever.

I'm not that big of a Megadeth fan but I think Rust In Peace was their best album although most fans and critics think So Far,So Good,So What was their best no Youthanasia or Countdown.

I gotta agree RIP kills Countdown, Youthanasia isn't all that great. That's a pretty wide assumption that "most metal fans (including me) countdown and youthanasia were better than RIP ....." Maybe in your circle, but everyone I know would strongly disagree.

I've personally never spoken to a single metal fan that counts 'Youthanasia' or 'Countdown...' as better than RIP, but hey, maybe you know "different" metalhead.

And for the record, both 'Peace Sells' and 'So Far' are generally considered the best Megadeth records.

Well, don't flame me, but I also prefer those over RIP...even though technically they're a bit weaker.

RIP may have better riffs in a lot of places but I don't feel like the overall songwriting is quite as good as some other Megadeth albums, structure wise or lyrically. Not to the heights to which the album is hyped at least....

As for kicking everyone's arse, at this point I really don't think so. With all the good metal that's come out in the past 5 years.............

I ve always enjoyed the more chaotic and jazzier feel of peace sells- technicality bores me. Yet, whoever the idiot that said Countdown to Extinction is better than rust in peace- truly needs help- massive help- you must be going deaf.

Marty Friedman RUINED Megadeth... sure, he rips, but his happy glam influences helped the band turn into the mainstream and flop on their asses.

They should have done everything in their power to keep Chris Polland...

I couldnt agree with you more xenophobe- Poland had and has such an unique style of playing- coupled with his jazz influences- that i always found to be far better than those masturbatory solos of marty. I used to suggest this many times on the megadeth board- usually a quarter of the people would agree with me. It was Marty that wanted to go pop.

i really love Chris Polands- return to metalopolis- and i hear his new band OHM is supossed to be pretty damn good.

I used to think the same thing jubei - but have you seen the VH1 music special? Apparently Dave never got sober at all after RIP...which just proves that drugs had little to do with their musical inspiration...I think he just gave up on the chase of trying to outdo James and Lars to be honest.

Chris Poland, although great, was a little too similar to the way Dave played his leads IMO. That's what made Marty Friedman so spectacular in Megadeth - his leads were full of heartfelt emotion, whereas Dave played with anger and hate. It was a good marriage because they were equally versatile yet different with unique trademark chops.

The decline in Megadeth after RIP was poor songwriting I'm afraid - not much else. Megadeth needed to fade out eventually because it was getting embarrasing - especially when touring with Motley Crue or Aerosmith, and releasing crappy live CD's & compilations etc.

The best thing Megadeth did in their final year was help a band like Iced Earth get a little more exposure. If only other 'bigger' metal bands would provide the same support to the underground...

Youthanasia is the best cd from Megadeth. The more I listen to Megadeth the more I find things I dislike about the band so I try to limit how much I listen to them. Dave was a great guitarist and never got enough credit but I think he sucked on vocals.

O yeah Dave kicks Kirk's butt.

Marty did rip, but I don't think that his playing fit with Megadeth. I was a huge fan when they first got signed, and had a bootleg with Kerry King (Megadeth's FIRST other guitarist).

That was great... too bad that didn't happen...

Hearing the albums as they were released turned into a bad thing, with So Far, being the last album I respected them for.

Poor songwriting is completely because of Marty's LACK of creatitivty. He can shred a lead, but I don't think his imput on the songwriting was anything to worth merit or mentioning.

You might NOT have liked Chris Polland because of his similarity to Mustaine, but I contend that it's this that made Killing and Peace Sells so great.

Actually, although I wet myself thinking of that potential lineup, I have to give kudos to the fact that Kerry king gave us Slayer instead.

Agreed - although I'll extend out to RIP.

You can't just really blame Marty for the poor song writing. It was Dave who was writing just as much crap. Breadline anyone?

I LOVED Chris Poland - and I'm dying to get hold of Megalopolis - but I think Marty and Dave were a better match up as reflected in RIP - their magnus opus.
