Melodic Death Metal

In Flames are my favourite band, i love their material up to and including Clayman but everything after is pretty horrible. I decided against listing them due to the negative comments towards them.

Anyway, check out Subterranean by In Flames, i think it's much better than Lunar Strain even if it is an EP.
I enjoy Subterranean as well. In Flames was one of the first two or three underground metal bands I liked. I actually think Clayman is pretty terrible, but Reroute to Remain is good. It's a pretty creative record. It was good that they didn't keep retreading old ideas. STYE was awful, and I gave up after that.

At the Gates - The Red in the Sky is Ours
At the Gates - With Fear I Kiss the Burning Darkness
At the Gates - Terminal Spirit Disease
In thy Dreams - Stream of Dispraised Souls EP (very hard to locate but essential; the rest of their stuff is inferior; don't be tempted to get it)
Amon Amarth - Sorrow Throughout the Nine Worlds
A Canorous Quintet - Silence of the World Beyond
In Flames - Subterranean

This guy = :kickass:

Dark Tranquility - The Gallery and The Mind's I

Amon Amarth - Versus the World and Once Sent From The Golden Hall

At The Gates - Slaughter of the Soul, With Fear I Kiss The Burning Darkness, The Red In The Sky Is Ours, Terminal Spirit Disease

In Flames - Whoracle, Lunar Strain, Subterranean, and The Jester Race

Wintersun - Wintersun and Time, when it comes out

Carcass - Heartwork

Kataklysm - In The Arms Of Devastation, earlier stuff

For fast paced stuff, try Dimension Zero. Not a big fan myself, but they're pretty solid. Might be worth checking out.

Some underrated/overlooked ones that are good:

Holymarsh - In The Holymarsh
Intestine Baalism - Banquet In The Darkness
Dawn Of Dreams - Darklight Awakening
Detonation - Portals To Uphobia
Cipher System - Central Tunnel 8
Omnium Gatherum - Spirits And August Light
Necroart - The Opium Visions
Compos Mentis - Gehennesis
Skyfire - Mind Revolution
In Thy Dreams - Highest Beauty
Illdisposed - Burn Me Wicked
Fragments Of Unbecoming - Sterling Black Icon - III - Black But Shining
Calmsite - Elvisdeath
Acephalus - Forgotten Shadows

Some are more "death" than "melodic" but I digress. There's a good mix of both in there.

Yeah, that's a really good album! One of the few melo-death American bands who doesn't have a shade of core influence.

Used to be a big fan of all things melodic death but it started to bore me after a while. Too many bands out there immitating In Flames and Soilwork just got really old.

Some bands from the genre I still listen to though:
October Tide
Kalmah
Opeth
Katatonia (early work, although it could also be considered doom, I suppose)
Carcass
Farmakon
Arsis
Quo Vadis

A lot of good recs so far. Some more:

Night In Gales - Towards the Twilight and Thunderbeast
Embraced - Amorous Anathema
Gates of Ishtar - Dawn of Flames, A Bloodred Path

Beyond the Embrace - Against the Elements

Ha! Them fuckers are from my hometown.

Carcass - Heartwork
Arghoslent - Incorrigible Bigotry
Arghoslent - Galloping Through the Battle Ruins
Avulsed - Yearning For The Grotesque
Ares Kingdom - Return To Dust
Nocturnus - The Key

like V5 said, more death than "melo-death" (which I find, on the whole, rather bland). Give me a good dose of brutality with melody thrown in and I'm sucked right in.

Anyone heard Darkness Rites? They're a decent melodic DM band from Ottawa, Ontario.

They're still pretty underground, but they've released a self-titled album, and I think it's pretty good. I'd check it out if you can get your hands on it.

I dig melodic death metal. My favorite bands are old In Flames, Dark Tranquillity, Arch Enemy, and At the Gates. I love the Subbterranean EP from In Flames.

Gardenian:headbang:

The first half of the song sounds like Bruce Dickinson is singing but from 3:50 the death growl starts...
