metal nerds

There is a difference between nerds and geeks. Geeks are incapable of having a life, tend to be either really fat or really skinny, have no real friends, and think they are cool due to their "1337 K0mpu73r 5k1LL2"

Nerds, however, while possessing an abundance of book smarts and computer savvy, are capable of heaving life in which they hang out with real friends, even play sports. There are tons of nerds on my wrestling team, including me. Nerds know that while they aren't as cool as jocks, they know that they'll be much more successful in life later on.

My... perception(? ) of the two words is actually the other way around. 'Geek' pretty much just means someone who is particularly good with computers (and related gadgets?), whereas a 'nerd' is much more likely to be friendless, self decieving about their habits or whatever, and play PnP RPGs in an obsesive way.

*shrug*

fyi most people's definitions of the two words are completely the other way around, so either you are wrong or everyone else is

also that wearing a "go away or i will replace you with a very small shell script" shirt from thinkgeek is not hilarious and does not help you in life

I know someone who has that! He is a fat nerd, but he is my friend :kickass:

Erik is right

I was citing an accepted definition among my peers at school, not my own personal opinion.

Yeah I always considered it to be the other way around.

To me nerds are people who are smart and who have their own little interests that 'normal' people would find stupid (like D&D or MMORPGs or anime or whatever zillion other things like that you can come up with) but they are not very self-aware and do not necessarily realise how other people look at them.

Whereas I consider a geek to be more someone who is equally intelligent and may have equally non-standard hobbies but they are more aware of what is and is not generally accepted and can adapt themselves to the norm somewhat when needed.

Basically the way I see it, nerds are different because they just can't help it and geeks are different by choice (or atleast somewhat by choice).

Which is why I said I prefer to consider myself a geek in that other thread. I have loads of geeky interests (like programming, and almost obsessively collecting music) but I do not really talk about stuff like that unless I know the other person might be able to appreciate it. And I may dress like a hobo (black cargo trousers, band shirt, army boots) but that doesn't mean I have no sense of fashion. I realise this is a very unfashionable look but it fits my personality and I feel very comfortable in it. Plus when you're a programmer you can get away with it anyway. No suit and tie for me thank you.

And every person from every music genre plays video games.

Actually I quit playing video games because I realized that when I got older and had more responsibility, spending hours sitting in front of a glowing box while pressing buttons in the right combinations isn't the best way to spend one's free time. But the same can be said of any other passive activities like television or movies.

The whole label of stereotyping someone as a "Nerd" or "Geek" is probably just a way of demonizing those who are actually intelligent and care about more in life than money and social recognition. If someone has no other goals than to collect as much Anime as possible and play World of Warcraft all day, then they truly are a waste of oxygen. However, is someone who is highly intelligent but sees the value of things like physical health and social responsibility simply to be placed under the same label? I really don't think so.

Perhaps my misconception was influenced by an article I read about Aperger's syndrome, in which it labeled the disorder's other common name, "Geek Syndrome". For those of you who don't know, Asperger's is a minor form of autism in which the afflicted excels in certain fields, most likely math, science and programming, while at the same time completely lacking any social aptitude.

Regardless, the two terms I say are interchangeable and to many people can bear the same definition.

This is also an argument for certain types of games. Most people consider "gaming" as sitting in front of a TV console bashing buttons and shooting down enemy soldiers. But just like numetal is the trash of music, video games, WoW, Counter-Strike are also degenerative garbage. If you've played interactive fiction, the "adventure" genre and some rpg's you'd know they can teach practical decision-making as well as responsible decision-making. It probably isn't productive as reading a book (depends on the book), playing your guitar or exercising and playing sports but it is better than drinking yourself into a stupor at the local bar while trying to pick up scantly dressed members of the opposite sex. And moderation is crucial.

All that I know is that

nerds+metalheads=PWNAGE!

I don't know if I can call myself a nerd anymore.....
Every time I say I'm a nerd, my friends laugh at me. They say that I'm "too socially developed to be a nerd". If that's the case, then I guess I'm just an intellectual.

but I :worship: nerds <3

There is a difference between geeks and nerds. Geeks are people who have a very strong interest in a particular subject, such as role-playing, technology or whatever. Geeks don't necessarly have to be intelligent. Nerds on the other hand are people who have an interest in obtaining new knowledge, without having to specialize themselves as much as the geeks.

ok, i think its obvious that there a whole lot of nerds in metal. what do you think of the culture.

Some geeks are cool, but most are only "partial intelligences" like the idiot farm at slashdot.org.

Here's an article on the metal-geek connection.

In other words, you share my conception.
