Just get back from my trip to Montreal and God, I'm still speechless about the show. From all the bootlegs, the DVD and from the comments I gathered, this was THE show. The Opeth guys were really into it, especially Mikeal who was always fooling and joking with the crowd. Also, the sound was terrific, just perfect! And wow, I was shocked how good of a live song The Grand Conjuration is, some effects on the drum make is even more jaw-dropping. I think they got the biggest response with "When", which was simply stunning. Blackwater Park was also fucking huge, it was definitely one of the highlight of the set, as far as I'm concerned. Finally, I think everyone who went to that show can say that Mikael is one of the best growler ever known to music, if not the best; his performance was simply unparalleled.

here's the songs they played:

1) Baying of the Hound
2) When
3) Bleak
4) In My Time of Need
5) The Grand Conjuration
6) Face of Melinda
7) Mikael Akerfeld solo song*
8) Deliverance
9) Blackwater Park
10) Demon of the Fall (encore song)

Also, I was finally able to meet Chris (Alcapoth) and his brother. Very cool guys! The bastards bought some freakin great Ghost Reverie t-shirt/hoodie. Unfortunately, I was too short on money to affort it. The day after the show, we went to see old Montreal...that was awesome! Man, definitely an unforgettable trip!

February, just wait for me!!

Pertaining to TGC, I loved that song at first, then I watched the video and it left a sour taste, but then hearing it played live TO PERFECTION has rekindled my love of it. It does really make for a good live song imo.

did nevercrap play for an hour? and did opeth go on about 2.5 hrs after the time shown on the tix?

lol well what the hell was it :D  there was a drum solo aswell?

if so, u're a lucky bastard o_O

heh ok..Mike told the crowd about his forthcoming solo song...he tuned his guitar lol. He got a pretty big response for his E string tuning.

And yeah, there was a drum solo...the drummer played different kind of beat (death metal beat, macho beat, gay beat etc.)

I was going to get a job and save up some cash to go to the Montreal show, but still I don't have a job... I wish I was there, sounds like a great time and I would have liked to see that setlist.

i agree that TGC is fuckin awesome live. has a lot of energy i thought. It's a bit like Creeping Death... that song is 100000x better live.

I hope on their tour in 06 they play some other songs off Ghost Reveries...

I was there. Honestly it was amazing. Mikael called Mendez a "fucking retard" and "our bassist cunt" because he headbangs sideways. Deliverance delivered :). But When, TGC, and BWP were amazing as well. I loved Mikaels solo song as well. The song was actually called "Tuning my blue guitar" on the album "music for retards" haha. Yeah, I high fived Mikael and Per. Awesome night altogether.

Good times. The weekend in Montreal was fantastique! I recommend visiting that city to anyone.

It was cool to meet up with you there. We definately must do that again in February. Montreal is THE place to see Opeth.

The fact that you know the french language was an extra bonus  haha!

Cheers until next time.

:headbang: Hell YES! Jesus Christ, I don't think I can even dream of a better concert than the one I saw in Montreal of Opeth. I was truly in awe. Best band in the best damn city I have ever visited.

Rensei pretty much took all the words straight out of my mouth about the show, haha - it was just THAT damn good. Holy crap, after the 5th time seeing them I was amazed this was BY FAR the greatest performance they ever did. And WHEN! For fuck's sake WHEN! I think I just about lost it when this song came on to the point where my lost the use of my voice, hehe. The moshpit for the song was seriously BRUTAL! All you guys in Montreal REALLY kicked ass and it was evident the band felt the EXACT same way about the city. Seriously, this song was the highlight for me, as was Bleak and OMG, the MOST beautiful version of Face of Melinda I have ever, ever heard (second time seeing this one live) and the excellent use of RED lighting truly set the stage for this incredible track - it's all about the MEDLEY's sound that REALLY enhanced the overall mood and quality, for sure. I was just...blown away by the majestic atmosphere the band has displayed.

Top 3 songs that showcased the most energy from what I have witnessed, I'd say were;

When, Blackwtare Park and of course, Demon of the Fall (as always - one in which I was at the balcony for the first time ever on a song; hey, I wanted to chill and see the finale from a bird's eye perspective, hehe, with beer in hand)

In the end, ALL the songs were A++ material - there wasn't a single thing I can say the show lacked. It was perfection, yes. And I agree, TGC is the PERFECT live song - OMG it was incredible and truly powerful and caused quite a stir in the crowd, oh yeah. ;) The terrific sound and shaking ground helped things out as well, of course.

And hey, Charles (Rensei), the trip to Montreal was DEFINITELY an unforgettable experience. So great in fact I did not want it to come to an end. But hey, damn, it was just too cool to FINALLY be able to meet up and chill out in such a beautiful city and as well, to the greatest band on the face of the earth (OPETH! OPETH! OPETH!). I loved the adventure and can't wait to go for another trip. Hell, you can bet we'll be there in February and HOPEFULLY I will be in 100% health this time around, which will make that perfect experience twice as enjoyable, haha.

Anyways, Cheers and a cheers goes out to all who attended that show. Man, I looked around and everyone was absolutely kicking ass at the show. I was totally revved up. I have NEVER seen a better crowd.

sidenote: And who was there that witnessed some hot girl strip-teasing up on the balcony after the show??? Hah, that caught some attention as well - ;) very, very nice!

On a final note, and in all honesty, the way I felt at the show, I don't really think words can even convey. SUPERB!

Thanks OPETH!
Man, when will I ever meet the guys? Oh well, whatever, so long as I keep enjoying their music.

amazing show indeed! and of all the metal shows I have seen between Toronto and Montreal, the best sound I have EVER heard, you could hear everything perfectly. A truly perfect setlist as well, and Nevermore's was equally impressive, and they fuckin KICKED ASS, I couldn't believe it. The highlight for me was that for some little radio show I have where I live, I got to interview all the guys from Nevermore and then interviewed Peter, and he was one of the nicest guys I've ever met, so easy to interview and knows his shit too. If anyone wants to host it for me, I'll send them the edited mp3 of the interview and post it up. That is all, I travelled 2000 km for the best show of my life, enough said.

Definitely an amazing show. I'm so glad this was at the Medley rather than some other crap place, The Medley always has great sound but Opeth's sound for this night was just mindblowing. So rich and full, especially for the acoustic songs.

The crowd singing along to In My Time Of Need was great.. although I'l have to be honest here, the best singalong of the night was for Nevermore's "The Heart Collector" - my favorite Nevermore song ever and the crowd sang it really well... I sang along the whole song word for word at the top of my lungs, hahaha.

That place was fuckin PACKED that night.. my only regret of the night was that I had people jamming into me the whole time and at times it was almost distracting from Opeth's set. Also the guys shouting "The Drapery Falls!!!!!!!" between every song when Opeth said they would not be taking requests was annoying.

I enjoyed Mikael's sense of humor over the night, I thought the funniest shit was when he told that story about a gay porn sountrack in the 70's and then introduced the next song.. "it was called Deliverance" - hahahahaha. I was the asshole who yelled out "GAY PORN!" during the acoustic part... couldn't resist.

Such an excellent setlist... add a Morningrise or Orchid song on there and it'd be as close to perfect as I could imagine.

Like others have said... easily one of the best shows I have ever seen and one of the best nights of my life. I almost didn't get to go because the tickets sold out, but I found someone on this board the night before the show selling an extra ticket, so I met up with him at the door before the show and bought his ticket off him. I honestly didn't think that was gonna work out and I was amazed when I realized a few hours later that I was standing there, actually seeing Opeth.

The girls stripteasing on the balcony was entertaining.. We were in line to get our coats from the coat check and a guy in front of me started yelling to them to show their tits, and they giggled and teased for awhile but it was obvious they were soaking up the attention and would end up showing some skin. At one point I yelled "DIRTYPILLOWS!" and lifted up my shirt, and eventually one girl lifted the shirt up enough to see her jugs. Hilarious shit.

For those of you going to Opeth in Montreal again in February... maybe we can catch a drink before the show or something. I expect that show to be amazing as well, hopefully it won't get sold out like this time and we'll have a little more breathing space in there.
