One was a band named Shadow Land. Melodic Heavy Hard Rock. Far from euro happy metal. Wanna scratch that note too? Hehehehe

damn - *throws notepad away* :erk:

:p

I listened to their songs as they came up on their player.

Impressions:

Amateurs, but plenty of ambition and creativity. Sound quality of the tracks are quite good.
Drummer's got chops, but really really wobbly tempo control. Yes he's fast, but no he's not controlled well enough.
The intro solo of Heresy Incarnadine, around 1:18 into it, was pretty painful. Yes, they're a young new band, but well, they ought to be able to tell when they play sour notes.
Not a fan of death metal vocals. Never have been, never will be. But I can still tell the difference between good and bad DM vocals. This is bad. I'm not scared in the least. Flesh for the Beast's vocals scare me. This doesn't.
The keyboards are really awesome! I didn't expect them to fit that well, but they're quite creative and sound appropriate. No Jordan Rudess wankery, just good ambience and creates the mood. Especially like them in Nocturne.

THAT DRAGONFORCE COVER WAS HORRENDOUS. Flat out. Sorry to step on toes, sorry to slag, sorry to insult, but that singer better stick to the death metal growling. HOLY ASSCRACK. NO. Simon Cowell would go lighter on him than I would. I ain't no Russell Allen but I wouldn't try to go slaughter a Sym X song unless someone told me I sounded good enough to try it. Someone shoulda told him ZP Theart is out of his league.

Flat-honest reply. No sugar-coating, no flaming.

It's ok..Amateurish for most part. Like a 3 or 4 out of 10. I'm not going to be as cruel, super quick to dissmiss, and flame as some in here are.

The good: In the DF cover, I like his highest range singing, but the rest is eh. I like the second half of the Disciples of Babylon song, the slow part.

The death vocals on Nocturne werent that bad. I like the mixing best on that song, and the drums seemed to be much better on it. Actually that song isn't so bad. I think it's the best thought out song they have on there. I like the keyboards, guitar, and solos on it as well. Now that the songs over I actually kinda like this song. If you hear this song first, and don't get hyped first, I think it gives the rest a different impression. I heard Fimbulvetr first..yucky yucky! I agree that the keyboards were good. The keyboardist does a good job.

The bad: The black metal vocals I thought were horrible on Fimbulveter, and background death vocals on it were really annoying on the one hand, yet somehow so bad they were kinda funny..I actually started laughing out loud at one point.

The production quality and sound levels/mixing are very distracting, and poor on most of the songs. The drummer needs some more practice, cause he's off somehow and the bass petal sounds like crap for most part. Heresy Incardine is kinda craptacular. The one redeemable thing I heard on it was the keyboards..the guitar on it was..not great. You kinda have that same sound and mixing from the Fimblelina song or whatever its called. Wow, wait...no.. Heresy Incardine actually pretty horrible.

When I listen to Dream Theater, as I LOVE their early stuff (IMAGES and then the rest up to Seasons), later on I find I like sections of songs, not so much everything in the songs, though there are alot of great songs nevertheless...with the songs from these guys, there are LITTLE parts I like..little little parts..much of it I don't care for. Nocturne is the best song they have on there. I think it would do a listener better to list the songs as part of a DEMO perhaps to set expectations more fairly. My expectations were already low from reading the thread/response so that's my take on it.

Cant listen to it at work, but probably will after college tonight... but woah... I hope MY band ever gets as in depth reviews (good or bad) when we get to release some studio and live material next week. Most of the time people dont bother... but this board is great!

Hey man, we have impossibly high standards as music fans. I admit it whole-heartedly! I'm sure that if I saw this band live, I'd have a better opinion of them. But I'm incredibly biased already simply cuz I don't dig the death metal vocals. I can't help it. I try to look past that and just focus on the musicianship. It's there for this band, but they've got work to do. Then I'm sure they'll be leaving far better impressions.
