Most Hit or Miss Bands?

The first bands that come to mind are 80's thrash that have had a resurgence after a 90's slump- Kreator and Testament are mainly what I'm thinking of. Outside of thrash, Napalm Death has much the same mid-career slump.
Hatesphere- love Bloodred Hatred and The Sickness Within, thought Serpent Smiles... was thoroughly meh, whilst To The Nines sounds better
For single albums, maybe Down II- some great songs, but littered jam session nonsense. Even more so for Jam Room by Clutch (not metal I know, and not surprising given the title), with regards to the amazing song/random elements bipolarity. Gojira albums also tend to have sections that don't always work for me, or at least go on too long.

Saxon. A lot of the time they just aren't metal enough.

They'll put out an album with one great metal song, 2 good ones, then 'let's all boogie down with the boy-o-lads' time stuff that just doesn't fit and is pretty annoying.

I wouldn't say it's that boring, sure it's wayyyyyy too mainstream, but...there are some pretty catchy tunes on that album.

I love Sleepless Again and that's about it. I listened to it a shitload when it came out cuz I do that with every In Flames album, cuz I'm a gay fanboy but it's my 2nd least probably.

The 3 Bsides from that album are the best. They're dumb for leaving them out. And leaving Mirror's Truth, and some of the other shit.

Megadeth. Every album up through Cryptic Writings has excellent songs. Every album they ever did has stuff that I would never listen to when others are around. Well, I do sometimes take Peace Sells and Hidden Treasures (three covers; hard to fuck up with only five original songs) on roadtrips with the family, but otherwise their albums have too many embarrassing moments.

Serpent Smiles is their only album that i don't like.

Yeah, pretty much. It's one of those albums which has all the right components, and there's nothing there to specifically irritate either, but overall it feels like they were just going through the motions. In fairness, straight after that album, all but one guitarist left, which suggests all was not well in Hatesphere-ville

I think Napalm death have had a few hit and misses, Defiantly one on smear campaign, just couldn't get into it at all. Got rid of that album quick,

Meshuggah. Me-fucken-shuggah. Either their songs are totally kickass and you play them from time to time and know the name(For me, Bleed, I, and Spasm) or you have NO idea of what the song is and don't care because you'll forget the rhythm(or lack thereof) as soon as it fades out.

A lot of Extreme Metal has this problem, actually. It's startling how many Tech Death albums only have THREE(that's right, no more, no less) memorable songs on them usually. If even that. Unless you're Nile. Then it's practically zero...

This post is just full of fail.

No, truths. Some bands don't know how to vary it up enough. And sadly, it's often Tech Death bands that fall under that category. And Meshuggah. No offence intended at all, they're a great band, just lacking a lot of memorable songs.

Since you commented on the "startling" number of Tech Death bands that have exactly 3 good songs on their albums..how about you start naming some..say name 8 of them and I'll be happy..and please mention the songs too

Agalloch - Some great songs and then some boring songs and instrumentals.

Paradise Lost, Anathema, My Dying Bride, Katatonia - around every other song from these bands I don't care for. Great bands though.

climax,contrast,etc...... which is the most significant thing, because as a listener like to be caught offguard and have no idea what's going to happen next. Knowing what's going to happen is boring.

Miss bands/boring bands are bands that feel the need to cram everything they know in one song down my throat in 30 seconds every song for the duration of a cd, specifically something they're good at like say lead guitar playing or hitting a snare drum really fast. These musicians to me are generally limited musicians because can not put something on the side and showcase musicianship in alternative ways equivalent to what they feel are their strongest aspects of playing/musicianship. If someone did not know they could hit a snare drum really fast or sweep pick for 5 minutes it would kill them because they're so tedious.

If I actually listed bands in metal that did this would be here for 24 hours.

Listening wise, example bands like Hatebreed, God Forbid, Meshuggah, and Lamb Of God are hit or miss; people will either like them or disslike them. Either way theres nothing wrong with liking them.

Meshuggah are all hit!

I hate bands that put more then 10 songs on an album...It's always the lower number track albums that are the best. Once you hit track number 11-14 that's when I get bored.

10 songs is perfect.

Not sure about that. There are tons of great albums with more or less than 10 songs. Not to mention the dozens of songs on most Grindcore albums.

Sorry for teh long delay. :saint:

The Faceless - Akeldama
Good songs, but only THREE stood out. Leica, An Autopsy, and the title track.

Obscura - Cosmogenesis
Anticosmic Overload, Desolate Spheres, and Infinite Rotation. Once again, the songs are good, just only three stick out. For me at least. Remember, this is all opinion. :p

Death - The Sound Of Perseverance
Scavenger Of Human Sorrow, their cover of Judas Priest's "Painkiller", and To Forgive Is To Suffer.

Blah, 8 is too much. Consider me "beaten" or something but yeah. From what I've been hearing so far, Technical Death Metal has a few bands that make a few fucken killer tunes, but then the rest of the album feels like filler. Either way, can't we agree Tech Death/Progressive Metal is good? o_O

Err...no shit? That goes for any band in the damn world.

and for Silent Descent..I suggest you check out more Tech Death bands before you bag on the genre as a whole..in fact check out either:

Necrophagist - Onset of Putrifaction
or
Martyr - Feeding the Abscess

they are two excellent tech death albums that I recommend to people that are trying to get into the genre
