Never heard anything from those bands.

As far as modern goes, I think Belenos is my favorite. Their debut came out in 1998, so 7/8 years is fairly modern, I guess. Drudkh and Hellveto are cool, too. Or perhaps Negura Bunget or Megiddo.

Been working my way backwards (Mayhem, Darkthrone and Bathory) lately instead of looking towards the new.

Most talented, I'd say DSO like everyone else, but Draco Sit Mihi Dux is probably my favourite album of the bunch and second only to Casus Luciferi in obvious DMDS-ripoffing.

Modern is an abstract term and everyone's bound to understand it differently. There's no point in trying to apply a rigid date range to a concept like modernity.
