:kickass: Great movie.

I watched "Aladdin" the other day. It's a good movie. No, it's not the first time I've seen it.

I doubt I could have somone as a friend who did not enjoy that movie

But I actually watched a movie this weekend which, in terms of stunning beauty and the feeling of "myth", was a match for Mononoke: House of Flying Daggers. It's no use trying to describe it; if someone here hasn't seen it yet, do yourself a favour and do something about it.

I didn't enjoy that movie very much. About ten minutes after leaving the cinema it had already merged in my memory with Hero and Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. It was really pretty, agreed, but everything else was derivative, and the film just took hours to end.

Visually yeah that movie kicked ass, but I thought the story lagged at times. Either way it was enjoyable, but didn't stand up to Hero or Crouching Tiger like Russell said (um, sorta :dopey: ). Of course those are two utter masterpieces so perhaps the comparison is unfair, but blah blah blah yadda yadda yadda poink.

What I love about Mononoke is that it just has fucking EVERYTHING I ever wanted in a movie: it is massively epic, with awesome characters, jawdropping animation, one hell of a story, and ATMOSPHERE! hats off Studio Ghibli - one of the most consistently unruly animation houses around!

Watched the original "Omen", "Failure to Launch", and "Office Space". Yes, I saw the new "Omen" before the original. They are almost exact copies. Some slight differences here and there, and the new one seemed more drawn out. Can't really say which I liked better, since they are so very similar. I need to see the sequels now. "Failure to Launch" was surprisingly enjoyable and "Office Space" was simply awesome.

Well I can agree about the ending to some extent; it was a tad too lengthy, but I never found it too slow or drawn out, but it would have been closer to utter perfection had it been somewhat shorter, I'll give you that ;P

What I loved about it (and Hero as well, CTHD I don't remember much of) is Yimou Zhang's ability to elevate movies to mythical heights, where the sparsly talkative and emotionally quite stoic characters transcend the individual plane and instead come to represent an "eternal" idea or ideal. To me, both Hero and FD come across as massive movies -- "grand" in a sense that is pretty hard to explain :)

Jet Li's "Fearless"

sadly, his last movie, but imo one of his finest. Amazing stuff.

edit: last martial arts movie I mean, anyway, so he says

Caught Pirates Of The Caribbean 2 on Thursday - a lot darker than the first one, does a 'Matrix Reloaded' and sets up directly for the third film at the end. The action sequences are brilliantly imaginative and laced with humour, Depp's performance is arresting as ever, and Keira Knightley is supremely hot.
