Look, most of the stuff I said about Symphony X was just to get a rise out of you; you made some ridiculous claim about their "sheer awesomeness overshadowing any other band" and told me to fuck myself... so, sorry to be a dick, but I think your post warranted it.

Obviously I wasn't being serious in my first post.

2). The "sheer awesomeness overshadows any other band" part. This is obviously incorrect. As an example, I offer Pink Floyd, who clean the floor with the entire heavy metal genre.

1. To nitpick, PF is not metal at all. And of course I wasn't being serious in that first post.

3). The "their lyrics aren't cheesy at all" part. You present The Odessey for your side of the argument: I'm not sure what you consider "oh yes, we'll ride through stormy skies... OF FIRE!" if not cheesy. I actually laughed (happily, though, I'll admit) when I heard that line.

Fine, that line is cheesy. But in comparison to DF's lyrics, SymX blows them out of the water. Looking at these:

It's easy to see which one is SymX's and which isn't.

The comparison to Dream Theater is one that gets tossed around alot, probably because people hear all the shredding and assume that SX is trying to be "technical." In reality, SX seem to focus much more on the lyrical/vocal aspect of things, with the shredding just providing a backdrop; sort of the inverse of the DT approach, which is all about technicality. In truth I would hardly even view Symphony X as prog at all, and I only contrasted them with Dream Theater because they're commonly associated with one another (SX are going to be playing support for DT on a coming tour, incidentally).

SymX focus more on creating great songs rather than the showboat thing DT does. Also, SymX are not purely prog and certainly less so than DT, but they do have countless prog elements in the music. Romeo is obviously greatly influenced by Queen.

The comparsion to Dragonforce is purely lyrical.

Meh, lyrics mean the least to me anyway.

Btw, S<issors listen to the last four minutes of The Odyssey for the best vocal performance Russel has ever given. Absolutely amazing.

Actually listen to that song because it is SO much more than just shredding, and completely kicks ass.

I think Gorgoroth will be considered classic in a few years. They've been greatly consistent despite all the lineup changes and have never strayed too far from the standard black metal sound while still refreshing their sound with each album.

I can't see any of these mainstream 'metal' bands like LoG, Trivium etc.. becoming classics because the mainstream will always cling to 'whats in', and will never stay with 'what was in' some 15 years earlier. Unless we're talking about Nirvana or Metallica here, but times have changed since then.

there are power metal bands without gay vocals --> Falconer or Wuthering Heights for example

Lyrically, Symphony X aren't half as bad as Dragonforce, but like I said... exaggeration to make a point.

I wasn't implying that Pink Floyd are metal; I was saying that they were better than any metal band, because it seemed like an understatment to say that they were just better than Symphony X. Actually, in my opinion, they're better than ANY band, but I know a lot of people wouldn't agree with me on that. Pretty sure that no one can argue with the "cleans the floor with the metal genre" statement, though.

Odyssey is indeed a good track. I have to say that Paradise Lost is probably my favorite of their albums, though, all told.

Anyway, sorry if I seemed pissy. I hope now that we can go on with our lives, forget all of this horror... and maybe, slowly, the scars will begin to heal.

Don't get me wrong, I am not a huge fan of their mediocre talented band, but it just has that wide appeal sound, that sound that could possibly capture all the angry teens of the new millenium. If not them, someone with a likewise sound.
Look what happened to Guns 'N Roses, they were the baddest at the time, and of course all the psychologically fucked kids went and became fans.

They deserve all the praise that can be thrown at them. Emotional, introspective, insightful, pioneering, talented, diverse... By far my favorite band of all time.
