NFL 2012

Romo 9/13 75 Yds 0/0

Ball Distribution. Witten and Austin are out so:

Murray 2/18
Bryant 2/15
Ogletree 2/15

Now that's spreading the ball around

Dallas D looking solid again. 3 and Out for the first Chargers possession and then Carr picks off Rivers on a deep ball on the next possession. Rivers limited to dinking and dunking for completions. Edit: Carr picks off Rivers again lol

OK, the Eagles should just put Vick on IR already and get it over with. The Glass House can't even survive survive a quarter without getting injured.

A very mixed preseason game for the Eagles. Foles really impressed me. He threw two really poor passes, one of which was intercepted and the other which was droped by the DB, but he bounced back both times. He also took a really big hit in the 3rd quarter and bounced right back up and threw a bug time completion. Most of the time he was accurate and on time. Really composed in the redzone too. At this point, I think he's one more good PS game away from locking up the backup QB spot and moreover, he looks like a starting NFL QB in the makinh.

LB Kendricks had a great game. Had a lot of tackles and was constantly around the ball. DE Hunt was dominant and looks like he'll play a big role this year.

On the downside, there were a ton of stupid penalties, including a number of defensive penalties on 3rd down. On offense, the interior o-line was really up and down. Evan Mathis really screwed up on the play where Vick was injured and there were a few other plays where guys got in too easily. At LT, I wasn't impressed by either Dunlap or Bell. That could be our Achilles Heel in 2012.

I was much relieved to see a second preseason game in a row where the Dallas oline (with 4/5 starters playing) gave Romo plenty of time (although I read some negative reviews of the oline effort, it didn't look that bad to me), and even with the field full of backup receivers across the board, the offense lit it up. Granted it was only the Rams, but I'll take it. Romo tossed two beautiful touchdowns to Dwayne Harris, one over the secondary for 61 yards, and another on a crossing pattern that turned into a 38 yard touchdown when Harris split right through two would-be tacklers while heading down the sideline.

Early in the game backup TE John Phillips made a nice one-handed catch in traffic that you wouldn't expect from a backup TE.

The Dallas first team D (still without Ware) surrendered the first points of the preseason on a 55 yd field goal, after the Rams rattled off a 40+ yd kickoff return and gave themselves excellent field position.

Garrett had said he didn't know how long he would leave the starters in, but after racking up 3 scores in the first quarter, most of the starters were pulled at the end of the 1st with the score-board reading 17-3. I say "most of the starters", but the first team was half backups and still managed to post those numbers.
On the injury front, Ratliff sustained a High Ankle Sprain, and is questionable for the season opener. With the play from the rest of the line candidates, this injury is not as concerning as injuries to all the WRs and Oline has been.

Edit: Dez Bryant under team "probation": http://espn.go.com/dallas/nfl/story/_/id/8304196/dez-bryant-dallas-cowboys-adhere-strict-team-mandated-guidelines-behavior

Personal security team, no alcohol, no strip clubs, etc.

Brutal blow for the Steelers. Hopefully DeCastro makes a full recovery for 2013.

I only got a chance to watch the Browns-Eagles game last night. Really impressed by Nick Foles. Great presence in the pocket, handles pressure well, good touch. Looks like he gets the offense; made some smart audibles that resulted in positive plays. The only red flag is that he has under thrown several deep balls, but he seems to have a strong arm, so hopefully that is a technique issue tht the coaches can help him with.

I think he's locked up the backup QB job. Far more talented than Kafka. I also think there's a good chance he will be the Eagles QB in 2013 if Vick fails to have a stellar season or gets seriously injured.

The D-line looked great again. The Eagles are gonna probably have to cut or trade a good DE in Tapp. He's had a very good PS, but its gonna be hard to justify keeping 6 DEs.

Son of a bitch. Torn ACL, LCL, and dislocated knee cap. Redshirt year for 3rd round rookie ILB Sean Spence. If he's ever the same again.

I forgot to post my write-up of the Giants' last game here. Not surprised at all Ojomo made it. Greg Jones presumably got swallowed up in a numbers game, as did Ware. I'll wait to analyze the 53 when it's finalized though. EDIT: Word coming in that Will Hill and Adrian Tracy making the team. 5 DEs? Could be bad news for an RB or WR. Surprised Dwayne Hendricks got cut. So they ride with 7th round rookie Markus Kuhn and the 2nd year rookie with back problems, Marvin Austin?

The Steelers finalized their roster, and here are a few notables, as it CURRENTLY stands:

They're only carrying 4 WRs on the active roster: Wallace, Brown, Sanders, Cotchery.

They're only carrying 4 CBs on the active roster: Taylor, Lewis, Allen, Brown

They did keep UDFA Robert Golden though as a safety, who can play CB.

After the Spence injury, they kept an extra LB, Adrian Robinson, but he plays outside. They only have Brandon Johnson and Stevenson Sylvester (currently injured) backing up inside.

They did keep all 5 main RBs AND the FB: Mendenhall, Redman, Dwyer (GREAT preseason), Baron Batch, Chris Rainey, and FB Will Johnson.

They kept 7th round rookie OL Kelvin Beachum over Trai Essex, although Essex may likely be brought back when DeCastro is moved to the new 8 week IR on Tuesday.

The New York Giants have announced their initial 53 man roster today following the release/waiving of 19 players and the announcement that cornerback Terrell Thomas and defensive tackle Shaun Rogers were placed on season ending injured reserve. First, let’s take a look at the list of cuts:

RB D.J. Ware
LB Greg Jones
CB Bruce Johnson (waived injured)
CB Dante Hughes
DT Marcus Thomas
WR Isaiah Stanback
OL Chris White
WR David Douglas
WR Dan DePalma
DE Craig Marshall
DE Matt Broha
DT Dwayne Hendricks
LB Jake Muasau
TE Larry Donnell
OT Matt McCants
OL Selvish Capers
OL Stephen Goodin
QB Ryan Perrilloux
DB Laron Scott

In addition to the movements of the above 21 players, 2nd year safety Tyler Sash will now begin serving his 4 week suspension. While he does so, he will not count against the 53 man roster.

Now, before taking a look at the final roster, let’s see what these cuts tell us about the Giants of 2012 thus far. To begin with, it is surprising and unfortunate to see that Terrell Thomas’ re-aggravation of his ACL injury from last season was apparently significant enough to end his season.

The NFL and NFLPA just recently passed a new injured reserve rule that would allow a team to designate one player for a separate injured reserve that would allow the player to return to play after being on it for 8 weeks. He can also return the practice after 6 weeks. Having been placed on the injured reserve now, however, means that his season is over, as the 8 week injured reserve does not begin until Tuesday.

There was also recent hope that Shaun Rogers would be able to return this season, but his season too clearly is over. It is an unfortunate move, as Rogers was brought in as an insurance policy for Chris Canty’s injury, who himself will begin the season on the Physically Unable to Perform list, requiring that he sit out at least the first 6 weeks of the season.

There are a few names on the cut list worth noting, though none are overly surprising. For starters, running back D.J. Ware, who had been with the team for the past 5 seasons, was undoubtedly a tough cut, but the team is deep at running back. They currently have Ahmad Bradshaw, rookie first round selection David Wilson, Andre Brown, and Da’Rel Scott, in addition to fullback Henry Hynoski.

The release of Greg Jones is also a bit of an eyebrow raiser. He started a couple games for the Giants last season in his rookie year. However, he was beaten out by Spencer Paysinger, who is primarily a special teams player.

In addition, the team elected to cut Dwayne Hendricks, who had a very solid preseason, in favor of 7th round rookie project defensive tackle Markus Kuhn. This is a somewhat curious decision given the questionable depth at the position. They also cut recent veteran signee Marcus Thomas, leaving only oft-injured 2nd year man Marvin Austin and the aforementioned Kuhn as the backups to starters Linval Joseph and Rocky Bernard until Canty returns to action.

Although the move should not be too surprising, given that the defense’s bread and butter is its pass rush, the Giants elected to give both Adrian Tracy and Adewale Ojomo roster spots at defensive end. In addition to former DE-turned-LB Mathias Kiwanuka, the Giants now have 6 pass rushers, though it is unlikely that both Tracy and Ojomo will be active on game days.

Meaningless preseason predictions:

NFC East: Giants
NFC South: Falcons
NFC North: Packers
NFC West: 49ers
Wild Card: Eagles, Saints

AFC East: Pats
AFC North: Ravens
AFC South: Texans
AFC West: Chiefs
Wild Card: Steelers, Bills

NFC Champs: Packers
AFC Champs: Pats
Super Bowl: Packers

The AFC seems pretty thin this year. NFC is stacked.

The Broncos won games on gimmicks in a year in which the entire division had a down year.

The Ravens' offensive line is incredibly old, their defense is banged up, and Courtney Upshaw probably won't even start the season as a starter because he's been disappointing. The Ravens are only going to go as far as Joe Flacco can take them this year.

How do ya not pick the Broncos? Lost Tebow and gain manning and no playoff? haha

It'll be 49ers or Giants again imo

The pressure is massive in Denver and I'm just not sure if Manning can be anywhere near what he was pre-injury. I'm also not so convinced that the team is all that talented. The division is weak, so they might win it anyhow, but I think the Chiefs have the more talented roster top to bottom.

Hey Dak & Dods, How do you guys feel about this game on Wednesday?

I think it's gonna be close, regardless of the score. Key matchups are the Giants front 4 vs the Cowboys oline, the Romo/WRs against the Giants depleted secondary, and Eli/WRs vs the retooled Dallas secondary.

Giants have to run the ball imo. I'm expecting a lot from David Wilson.

Oh and don't you forget about Martellus Bennett! har har

btw, you pick up Madden?

Yes I did. I absolutely hate the new interface and franchise setup. PITA to get around in. Also going to have to learn how to defend the deep ball all over again, the physics are different.

I do like the improved collision detection and player fluidity. Dez Bryant has made some realistic looking highlight real catches.
