Non Metal Leanings

I'm curious to know what do you guys (and gals) listen to in your "metal down time" - rather, what do you listen to outside of metal?

Personally, Every now and again I love breaking into classic Jazz and blues and listening to a lot of the stuff from the 1930s - 60s. A lot of soul and brilliant musicianship in that music.

Thanks to my bass playing turning me onto Matt Dusk, I can't get enough of his music (basically, he's the modern Canadian Sinatra - great band and voice).

Finally, Symphonic Music is another type of music that gets a lot of spins. I dig a lot of the 80s and 90s video game music (such as Final Fantasy) that was just brilliantly composed. Film scores and such are always fun and typically very powerful music. Perfectly suited for metal fans. :headbang:

Second to metal I listen to punk/hardcore most. Biohazard, Napalm Death, Discharge and Madball for example. Thirdly, classical musicians like Beethoven and Chopin. I find some Beethoven especially to be quite moving. Then there's the rest like hard rock, alternative and some pop. As a guilty pleasure I sometimes listen to some 80's synth-pop like New Order and Eurythmics (*looks around nervously*) and some J-pop. The fuckers just have to make it so catchy. Feels like eating too much ice cream and saying to oneself. "Just one more cup, one more..". Some pop I can listen to without guilt is The Beatles.

Yes, I like some Final Fantasy music by Nobuo Uematsu too.

J-Dub..... just for you, I will mix you a Brother Cane's Greatest hit's release. Though they hail from Birmingham Alabama, I wouldn't label them "exactly" Southern Rock as some songs definitely have different influences than Southern Rock, much of there stuff is heavily influenced from Southern Rock.
Their former lead vocalist/lead guitarist, Damon Johnson is no slouch in the music business. He was Alice Cooper's guitarist on his last tour and he has even released an album with Queensryche's drummer... whose name I can't seem to be able to spell at the time. I think you will dig the Brother Cane.

Cool! Thanks!I'll look forward to it. I know you've mentioned them before, but they just keep slipping off my radar. I've been busy as shit lately, and always forget to follow up on this kind of stuff. One month from Prog Power USA, I SO need a vacation!
I just downloaded a couple of cool FM broadcast Blackfoot shows from 80 & 81.....that was SUCH a good time for music....
See you at PP!

I play list of music besides metal I guess my favorite genre out side metal is what I call Fusion.

These are some artists and bands I think are within that genre:

7 For 4
Bozzio Levin Stevens
Canvas Solaris
Cosmosquad
Derek Sherinian
Electric Outlet
Gordian Knot
OHM
Sean Malone
Thonk

Now playing: 7 For 4 - X-Dreams

i listen to alot of classical, orchestral music...all the time really...not to "get away" from metal.

John Williams. hes an amazing composer, truly is. i have alot by him. James Horner is great as well, hes not as good though. Williams as much more style, he is able to mold to different moods and atmosphere better, but both are still great.
London Symphony Orchestra and such are good listens as well.

i also listen to celtic music. some stuff from groups such as celtic woman, lord of dance, and so on. Mairead Nesbitt is my favorite listen, i listen to alot featuring her. (she has played in both of those groups, is still in celtic woman).

of course because of that, also traditional irish/scottish type music. no specific artists for that though.

--there is also classic rock type stuff. you must listen to some CCR, :D (i see rainbow under this category, i call them metal, lol, but of course rainbow rules)

Pretty much just classic rock, soft rock, and pop stuff from the 70's and 80's, as well as old Mtv and 1-hit-wonder type stuff. Grew up on this shit...

Steely Dan
Zeppelin
Foreigner
Ambrosia
Firefall
Journey
Bowie
Yes
Kansas
Boston

Same here + German Music like Peter Maffay :worship:, BAP:headbang:, Klaus Lage, Silbermond

And my closet addiction to Southern Rock:

Molly Hatchet
Lynyrd Skynyrd
some Allman Brothers
Doc Holliday
38 Special
Blackfoot

It's ok brutha - come outta the closet. Well, being from Florida, and more specifically Tampa home of the Outlaws, I LOVE Southern Rock. Green Grass and High Tides Forever!

Non-metal likes:
Old Country/Outlaw Country/Alt-country
Roots Rock/Americana
Punk
New Wave
Rockabilly
Numerous assorted Classic Rock bands
Neil Diamond - yep, Neil Diamond
Love classic 70's era Rod Stewart

NP: Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros - Johnny Appleseed

Sieges Even are amazing! I didn't know that you are their myspase maintainer, Hawk.

I haven't listened to their new CD yet, but "The Art..." and of Course "A Sense of Change" are fantastic.

Well, now you know. ;) Why don't you join us? I'll keep you updated with news on releases, interviews and upcoming tourdates.

I haven't personal myspace page and, at this time, I am not interested in the whole thing. I use myspace only for listening music.

But I will bookmark the Sieges Even adress, that will help me visiting their page more often. :)

Assorted classic rock, i.e.: the Allman Brothers, the Band, Jackson Browne, Cheap Trick, Eric Clapton, Creedence, CSNY, Bob Dylan, Peter Frampton, Grateful Dead, Jimi Hendrix, Don Henley, Kansas, Skynyrd, Van Morrison, Ted Nugent, Tom Petty, Pink Floyd, the Police, SRV, the Who, Brian Wilson, Zeppelin, among others.

Assorted alternative, i.e.: Barenaked Ladies, Better than Ezra, Blind Melon, Chili Peppers, Counting Crows, the Darkness, Everlast, Green Day, Guns N' Roses, Nirvana, Offspring, the Pixies, Puddle of Mudd, Queens of the Stone Age, Seether, Staind, Stone Temple Pilots, Sublime just to name a few.

A variety of country and bluegrass (American by birth, Southern by the grace of God) including .38, Cross Candaian Ragweed, Merle Haggard, Alan Jackson, Montgomery Gentry, Brad Paisley, and all kinds of other country/folk-ish tunes. Throw in some classic R&B a la B.B. King, Ledbelly and, yes, even some Miles for good measure. And the rather obscure Yonder Mountain String Band. Definitely worth a listen if you're a folk/bluegrass fan (don't expect to find many here) and you've never heard 'em.

Mix in some hip-hop/rap here and there, via 2Pac, David Banner, the Beastie Boys, Bone Thugs, Bubba Sparxxx, Cypress Hill, Dr. Dre, Eminem, Grandmaster Flash, Ice Cube, Jay-Z, Jurassic 5, Talib Kweli, Nas, N.W.A., Notorious B.I.G., OutKast, Public Enemy, Kanye, Wu-Tang off the top of my head. Add a spoonful of the psychopathic stuff (Twiztid, ICP). And some reggae via Bob & Damian Marley.

You could pretty much say I'm all over the place. Of course, this all takes place within the 11%< I'm not listening to

. :kickass:

Oh, and that was all without looking at my iPod. :D

I should be shot for leaving the Outlaws out. It was by no means intentional! :) I would say that from the rebel rock genre, my two biggest faves would be Molly Hatchet & Blackfoot.

Just played a gig at the Baked Potato, had to skip it. We were in a heatwave 113-116 degrees and I heard the place had nil a/c . I'm now keeping up with their myspace site in hopes of catching another gig.

I love the BP! I haven't been to the "new" one yet.
I made a couple trips out for Keneally shows at the one that is a short walk from Cat & Fiddle (I BARELY remember the endless pitchers of Newcastle there!:headbang:)

Even though the Outlaws are from my hometown, my fave Southern, and Florida, band is Blackfoot.

Art of Navigating is what really hit me. I tried Uneven, but it never hit me. I really like Menses vocals. I think TAoNbtS is one of the best releases I have ever heard. Every song is great. I am waiting on Paramount with baited breath.
