Official "Sports" thread

Defiance

I vårens ljusa kvällar
Hi all!

In order to respect everyone's tastes here, I decided to create a thread in which we can talk about sports. The purpose right now is, obviously, to talk about the Football World Cup, but we can talk about other sports too (see the name?). For example, I hope the Celtics win the NBA championship hehe, I'm not very fond of the Lakers.

Scuba diving, deer hunting, hockey :))), and every other sport you can think of belongs here.

On the WC, I'm really happy Deutshcland one, and so I can only hope that the Azzurra losses, mua hahahaha!

Cheers!

- Daniel.

Netherlands just beat Denmark. This pleases me. Sorry, Danes - I just have an insane love for the color orange.

Thidrek made a comment that it seemed unusual that the USA is interested in World Cup for once.

Well, there's a few reasons for this. Nationally, at least, the various networks and news agencies have been talking about it a lot, both from a sports standpoint, and from a historical/cultural standpoint, because it's being held in South Africa. So now it's at least on people's radar.

Now locally in Seattle, we're excited about it. Seattle in general just *loves* football/soccer. We have a local team, the Seattle Sounders, who play sold out games all the time, and they're enormously popular. So, with the USA-England game on, there was a lot of interest.

I also live in a part of town called 'Rainier Valley'. Seattle is a pretty segregated city racially, and Rainier Valley is populated by a lot of different immigrant communities. White people like me? We're in the minority. Which I just love, I love all the diversity in my neighborhood and seeing all the different cultures in action. So nearly every single restaurant, coffee shop, bar, etc. that had a tv, had it on the game. I ended up watching the first half in a Cajun restaurant with some acquaintances. Then, lunch broke up, and I walked down a few meters to the Islamic halal deli in the same strip mall, and saw the second half of the game while drinking some tea.

Enough pondering. Italy vs. Paraguay is on!

Not a big fan of football, but the WC (and EC) are sometimes worth watching. They had a projector in a big meeting room set up to display the match here where I work so I decided to watch Denmark - Netherlands match too :) Was fun, especially the "gift" goal from Denmark early in the second half was hilarious, almost seemed as if he did it on purpose

I'm just watching the world cup because my room mate has it on. Other then that I think sports suck.

OK! Tomorrow's games!

Match 1: New Zealand vs. Slovakia
Match 2: Côte d’Ivoire vs. Portugal
Match 3: Brazil vs. North Korea

Match 3 I'll be able to watch at work. I am looking forward to it greatly.

Interesting cultural note, thanks!

it ended up with 1-1

Yeah  , I wanted Paraguay to win. Then again, Italy is so bad they couldn't score again against a team like Paraguay haha.

Let's how much Brazil scores tomorrow :p . Or maybe NKorea have something up their sleeves…? o_O

ahahah italy in general isnt' that bad, since it won the last world cup
i'm not into football, so i don't know if this year's team is worse than usual, which players are better then others and tecnical stuff like that, but what can i say is that yesterday's game was pretty awful

Yeah, it was... and i don`t see Italy among the favorites to win the cup anymore.

But i love to see that the german team is way better than anybody expected. :worship:

i don't think it was among the favorites 4 years ago....
that victory came as a miracle...nobody expected that, i suppose...or i least i didn't expect that.
italy's last victory was in 1982, 4 days before i was born  so it was the first time for me to see italy winning the cup!
the italian team won the 11th of july and i was born the 15th. i risked to have one of those ugly names: Italia or Vittoria (victory) or Azzurra (light blue) all connected with this happening.
a lot of girls who were born in that month have been named like that :erk:

Brazil vs. North Korea in 25 minutes. It is going to be so massively wonderful. I cannot wait.

North Korea is shipping in fans from China to show support, even.

And wow - NK is holding their own! At halftime, it's 0-0! No one has been able to score! I imagine that things will get more aggressive in the second half, but this is a great match so far.

Brazil 2 - Korea 0 : boring as hell. Korea is better than expected (a good share of offensive moments at the 1st half) and Brazil is the most boring team ever. It seems like this WC will suck hard.

EDIT: Korea scored!! Brazil 2- Korea 1. The latter was at the offensive at the end. Shameful win IMO. Good for Korea, I hope they could get into the next stage.
