Opeth is the greatest band ever

No offense dude, but a lot of shit you listen to is fucking garbage. So it goes both ways.

I normally disagree with the shit Mort says, but here, he is right.

Opeth is music made both by, and for, pseudo-intellectuals.

"Hey guys let's stick a 5/4 acoustic section next to a 14/8 heavy section, bookended by clean guitar sections in 7/8. So fucking prog, right?!?!"
"Perfect! Put it on the album, this is a masterpiece!"

Or people who don't give two fucks about what time signatures they use and just enjoy the music

I mean, feel free to enjoy the music. I'm not trying to imply that people are forbidden to like bad music.

But Mort is still right, they sorta suck. They have no grasp of how to write cohesive music.

Opeth might be top 50, but they're not the best band ever. First five albums are damn good though. Rush is probably the best band ever. Led Zeppelin and Swans could make a case for themselves.

Opeth is ok. Still Life is a good album. Their songs are still more sensible and less masturbative than Virgin Steele.

Opeth have some decent albums.

Opeth haters are as bad as Opeth fan boys. Both should be rounded up and exterminated.

Opeth isn't the only band to close forums here due to criticism. Arch Enemy, Katatonia and some others have also done that. The Katatonia forum closing was sad. Great band, great forum, but someone made a thread criticizing DEK and the band asked for the forum to be closed. At least that's what the word was back in the day.

As far as Opeth goes, some good albums, some bad albums. Still Life and Blackwater Park are their best.

Can I say they make goddamn boring music then? I will say their latest is pretty listenable prog rock.

Opeth dominates. Easily one of my favorite bands.

Not liking them is one thing, but to say they make bad music is flat out wrong.

no it isn't. they've always been awful songwriters who cannot get down transitioning from section to section if their lives depended on it (was more so a problem when they were going between metal and acoustic bits) and their pacing has always been horrible always leaning towards overextending songs.

It's actually quite correct. Opeth are the kings of haphazardly slapping together contrasting sections and calling it a song. As I've stated previously, they have no grasp of how to write cohesive, well-written music.

If you like the band, good for you, I'm not saying it's wrong to like bad music. I like a few bad bands myself, and I'll be the first to admit this. But to claim they write well-written music, when in actuality they do not... quite frankly, I think you are deluding yourself and I find it amusing.

Blackwater Park ftw, although I admittedly have only heard bits and pieces of the newer proggy stuff. I've been told all good things.
