Seriously guys, people are justifiably irritated that Opeth are playing in a festival with many a subpar band. Most of them arent even in the same vein of metal as Opeth. So fans arent supposed to be irritated by that? I am. I think it is sad that Akerfeldt will go on record saying, "if they dont like our music, fuck em" and then join the ranks of a money-making expedition. That is bullshit. You guys who are saying, "get over it" obviously arent paying attention to anything. You're the same people who are saying this festival is just for Opeth to make more money and gain a larger fanbase. Yet, you're also the same group who says Mike is all about the music. Well, which is it?
And please stop telling me to "get over it". If you've got an argument, present it.
Despite the fact that you quoted part of my post, I am sure that you will accept that most of your retort does not apply to me.
Although I am not sure what I may not be paying attention to, perhaps this does not apply to me either. You have an opportunity and an option. I doubt that complaining about some bands not being to your taste will affect anything. My argument, if there is one is that you should count yourselves lucky that you have this opportunity. Knowing the size of the US market, I am sure that there will be headlining tours for you also. That makes 2 opportunities in a short space of time.
Sure you may be irritated by there being many a band that you do not care for. You will also accept that everyone's tastes differ and there will be some that would kill for such a lineup. I personally would not believe my luck to be able to see Opeth and Strapping Young Lad in the same place for the price of a new CD. I am all for the diversity of acts for a festival, I treat them as a very different thing from headline tours when I would generally expect a closer affiliation to the type of music being presented.
I am pleased that Mikael does not want to try and cater for the masses. I have no idea how much money or exposure they will from such a tour and I hope they get what they want from it, but were I on the same continent I would go and support them.
There would be no point in me getting all protective about Opeth being something personal to me and worrying about the trendy kids jumping on the band wagon, because I noticed that all happen about 4 or 5 years ago.
The fact that they have a commercial opportunity doesn't affect the songwriting (I hope). I certainly have not had a problem with the last four albums.
Opeth are no longer an underground commodity as is exemplified by the bidding war that is going on with various labels at the moment (and to answer another point, MetalBlade are not bidding according to a reliable source). This does not detract from the fact that the first albums were completely underground. Perhaps you could use this to justify their presence?
I am sure that most of your post was not directly specifically at me, but as I am sure you are aware by now, I will answer them if they appear to be. You do seem to lack some of your usual reason in this post, but maybe it IS something that you feel THAT passionately about. You should check out the lineups for some of the UK festivals if you want to see just how lucky you acually are though...
I have less of a hangover now I have had another 5 hours sleep, so I apologise if I was rude earlier, I never intend to offend (or it will be unmistakeable if I do).
Alex.
