Opeth, Lamb Of God, Gwar, Strapping Young Lad, Chimaira, Clutch+more-New 18 Band Tour

bwaahahaha!

Seriously guys, people are justifiably irritated that Opeth are playing in a festival with many a subpar band. Most of them arent even in the same vein of metal as Opeth. So fans arent supposed to be irritated by that? I am. I think it is sad that Akerfeldt will go on record saying, "if they dont like our music, fuck em" and then join the ranks of a money-making expedition. That is bullshit. You guys who are saying, "get over it" obviously arent paying attention to anything. You're the same people who are saying this festival is just for Opeth to make more money and gain a larger fanbase. Yet, you're also the same group who says Mike is all about the music. Well, which is it?
And please stop telling me to "get over it". If you've got an argument, present it.

Despite the fact that you quoted part of my post, I am sure that you will accept that most of your retort does not apply to me.

Although I am not sure what I may not be paying attention to, perhaps this does not apply to me either. You have an opportunity and an option. I doubt that complaining about some bands not being to your taste will affect anything. My argument, if there is one is that you should count yourselves lucky that you have this opportunity. Knowing the size of the US market, I am sure that there will be headlining tours for you also. That makes 2 opportunities in a short space of time.

Sure you may be irritated by there being many a band that you do not care for. You will also accept that everyone's tastes differ and there will be some that would kill for such a lineup. I personally would not believe my luck to be able to see Opeth and Strapping Young Lad in the same place for the price of a new CD. I am all for the diversity of acts for a festival, I treat them as a very different thing from headline tours when I would generally expect a closer affiliation to the type of music being presented.

I am pleased that Mikael does not want to try and cater for the masses. I have no idea how much money or exposure they will from such a tour and I hope they get what they want from it, but were I on the same continent I would go and support them.

There would be no point in me getting all protective about Opeth being something personal to me and worrying about the trendy kids jumping on the band wagon, because I noticed that all happen about 4 or 5 years ago.

The fact that they have a commercial opportunity doesn't affect the songwriting (I hope). I certainly have not had a problem with the last four albums.

Opeth are no longer an underground commodity as is exemplified by the bidding war that is going on with various labels at the moment (and to answer another point, MetalBlade are not bidding according to a reliable source). This does not detract from the fact that the first albums were completely underground. Perhaps you could use this to justify their presence?

I am sure that most of your post was not directly specifically at me, but as I am sure you are aware by now, I will answer them if they appear to be. You do seem to lack some of your usual reason in this post, but maybe it IS something that you feel THAT passionately about. You should check out the lineups for some of the UK festivals if you want to see just how lucky you acually are though...

I have less of a hangover now I have had another 5 hours sleep, so I apologise if I was rude earlier, I never intend to offend (or it will be unmistakeable if I do).

Alex.

arrrrghhh! i just checked out Opeth.com. you guys failed to mention that there will be "headlining tours" after the festival tour. my anxiety has decreased. i still dont understand what Opeth is doing at this "sounds of the underground" bullshit festival. indentured servitude?

exposing themselves to a younger audience.

hmmmmm...that sounds kinda naughty.

EXACTLY. The only person to 'get it' so far this thread, no offense to anyone else. Opeth want to get bigger. You don't -really- get bigger with a headlining tour.
I wouldn't mind seeing Opeth get "bigger" on a tour of extreme metal bands that they would FIT the BILL on.
i'm sure artists don't want to sacrifice there musical intergrity just to get "bigger". I just don't see opeth fitting the bill with the length of thier songs, being they don't have "BrEAkDwonz YO".
I like wise tour of more genuine extreme metal bands (death. black, grind, thrash, doom) in the underground would make more sense for Opeth.
Perhaps those bands that are more true to the death/extreme metal genre wouldn't be as "profitable".
We're NOT implying that the kids whom listen to Unearth couldn't possibly enjoy Opeth are vice versa, However, this fest is a "Ninja mosh pit" fst.
Is the bil was more balanced with some extreme metal bands, death, grind, thrash, black opeth appearnce would make more sense.

this is exactly what i'm saying and im surprised that the forum seems split down the middle with reaction. i would expect at least *some* irritation on everyones part. the bands they are touring with simply dont make any sense from a musical standpoint.
another thing that irks me is the guys who are bitching at me seem to be the same guys who bitched at me awhile back when i said Opeth aren't exempt from money-making priorities. I cant prove this though because i cant go back and search the threads but i *do* remember alot of you guys giving me shit for saying that. now, im irritated by the latest developments and some of you guys are saying, "well, they gotta make some money you know." well, dudes, thats exactly what *i* said 6 months ago! have some consistency!

I know touring with more legitimate extreme bands would be less profitable, but I would be more than willing to pay $30-40 to see Opeth/Isis or Opeth/Morbid Angel at the top of the bill. I know they can't get away with being Dream Theater and charging between $40-50 for tickets yet. I think people are willing to pay to see a good concert. King Diamond/Nile/Behemoth tickets are $30, and I'll pay for that, even though I'm not a huge fan of any of those.

It may not be all bad, Metal Blade are involved in the organisation therefore its quite likely that they may waesle on one or two of their bands... Amon Amarth, Cannibal Corpse, God Dethroned etc. don't talk like the whole line up is confirmed... tho it has no effect on me, com on UK headlining tour:)

Personally, I'd much rather send Opeth a check or cash than have most of my money going to all the other bands there. Think about it. In the $25 you pay for your ticket, maybe 25 cents goes to Opeth. You really arent supporting the band at all by going to this. Sending the bands direct funds would be much more beneficial, and a genuine act of kindness for the music they have given us over the years. I could care less about hearing Masters and DotF surrounded by a bunch of retarded mallcore kids. However, I do understand the point of reaching out for a broader audience, which is what they are doing with this tour.

Its not hypocritical to want "success" for Opeth and not be in favor of them gaining "mass" popularity; success isnt limited to merely economics. What makes Opeth great is something most people simply wont get no matter the exposure; thats not obnoxious internet elitism at work, its reality. Opeth is a great deal about atmosphere and tension; things that get absolutely destroyed by the crowds at most metal shows, and certainly if they follow an act like GWAR or Lamb of God. If you feel increasing their revenue at essentially any cost is a good thing, then i guess we'll have to agree to disagree.
Opeth has achieved their current success by building a fanbase that are "music" fans, for the most part, and I can only see that increasing by continuing to do what they are best at- releasing quality music without the hype and media BS. But signing up for tours that essentially are giant ads... i dont see how thats a positive or lasting addition to the fanbase.
I agree. No one's being elitist here. No one is saying that the kids whom enjoy Unearth's music can't enjoy Opeth and vice versa.
It's just that this fest is not a balanced bill, if it was i would tolerate it. God knows how many hardcore shows i've been to growing up here in NY.
It would be to Opeth's advantage if there was a death/grind/black metal stage or something.

I love GWAR. They are the best metal (if metal at all) band ever made.

They need to add Decapitated...and that would round out the tour very well. Because then Iw ould see Opeth, SYL AND Decapitated. and that's all I need.

So...When will Opeth open for a Linkin Park concert?

I can't wait...coz, you know, Opeth needs moar money, so we need to support them in whatever touring decision they make...

eesh. too many of those lame metalcore bands. I will go for Opeth of course, SYL, and Gwar.

I don't really care about the ticket prices, I'm willing to pay whatever to see Opeth.

I just hope they get enough time to play a decent amount of songs. at least 6. They'll probably squeeze some shorter songs from Damnation in.

I can't wait!

Something to think about:
How do we even know that the new album will be released at the time of this tour? It would have to be released within ~3.5 months of them entering the studio, which is a bit early I think. For most bands it seems to take 5+ months... I also checked the Deliverance dates and it was a little over 4 months.

So maybe this will just end up being a little promotion thing where they play the "cliche" Opeth songs, and then do the real tours afterwards when the new album is actually released.

I tell ya, I wouldn't mind seeing Opeth at one of those European Fests like Wacken Open air, Waldrock. I think the market is vastly different in Europe. Nu Metal bands tour Europe too, but the major metal fests in Europe are far more extreme (for the better), better run, and more well attended. I'm kicking myself for not going to Europe when I could afford it in 2001.
