opeth listenability

You guys should try getting the late 30 to 40 years olds into Opeth! Pretty much most of my friends won't put up with the growls but do like Damnation a lot...

my parents dig the soft parts

So do mine, at least what they heard. Hard not to be awed by the increasing beauty of Opeth clean solos. Mike has some amazing feeling coming out of his guitar recently. I loved when I played Hours of Wealth, Isolation Years, and A Fair Judgement and my dad, who knows I listen to lots of weird shit, said, "You know, they're pretty mainstream." I simultaneously wanted to laugh and dig my eye out with a kiwi. At least they dug them though. Now to unleash Ghost of Perdition, Deliverance, and the Funeral Portrait. :flame:

I don't have a single friend listening to Opeth without being forced by me. It sucks. I've got alot of metallica-, scorpion-, greendayloving friends but none of them understands what salvation is like. I often say to myself when trying, "they won't like deliverance, it's to heavy and they don't like growls" so i play them something from damnation or to bid you farewell or whatever and they get bored to death somehow.
perhaps GR is better...

This is a real problem of mine:P

Did you make that thing on your sig? Is it made of paper? How'd you do that?? It's really sweet.

No, I didn't make it, although I would love to take credit for it. I don't even honestly remember where I found it. If anyone knows where it came from, I'd be glad to know. It's a pretty cool piece of art. And just assuming, i think it's made of paper.

I've never heard another band that sound anything like Opeth. A friend played me 'Blackwater Park' 6 months ago and I was hooked instantly. My favourite album was 'Still Life', but I'm listening to GR for the first time as I type this and the hair is standing up on the back of my neck... wow! I may have a new favourite...

I love musicians who keep pushing forward, challenging themselves, and who don't just churn the same stuff out time after time. Listening through Opeth's albums you can hear where they've come from and how far they've taken their sound. Breathtaking passion, energy and talent. What an incredible band. Going to see them in London, very excited !

I don't understand people who only like one sort of music. I don't think there's such a thing as bad genres, just bad bands. I'm a DJ - I play drum'n'bass and breakbeat at squat parties - yet my favourite music is Vaughn Williams, Stravinsky, Nick Drake, Jeff Buckley, Aphex Twin, Tori Amos, Tom Waits, Mr Bungle, Bille Holiday.

Good music demands your attention. If something's loud/aggressive/wierd/different sounding, why does that put so many people off?

I have encountered the same problem with people, they just are not used to listening to songs that are longer than 5 mins. When i first heard Opeth with MAYH, i didnt really care for it a first cause of the length, but, that quick changed. Song lengths take time just getting used to by repeated listens, most people just are not patient enough and are probably just fast forwarding through the first listen anyway to find catchy sounds in the song

There you go. The only emotion punk bands know is anger against 'The Man.'

And for getting people into Opeth, try Face of Melinda.

opeth introduced me to new feelings in music...a lot of death metal, punk, indie, etc...bands today have a very up-front, in your face presentation. there is something else about opeth...some, i dunno...entity, that you have to find. for me, opeth's music is very visual. i always have an image, and i always find myself searching for something else. most people don't even make an attempt at finding that...they hear the growls, and automatically think death, childish rebellion, noise, not music, no talent! then they hear the clean parts, and the no talent part is taken out of the equation...but the growls...ahhhh!!!! they could only mean one thing!!!!

the other day, i was listening to baying of the hounds...and i found a feeling that i had been looking for in the chord progression after the part with the major key...i got so excited that i couldn't control myself...i had to go walk around and smoke a cigarette...right then!!!

Exactly. Just about every heavy band seems to be the same way... they try to be as heavy and/or as shocking as possible. They scream at their fans and call them motherfuckers at concerts. Nothing wrong with that, but sometimes, it seems like they are trying too hard. Opeth is so sincere... they write heavy music, but not just for the sake of being heavy. It seems to come more from the heart, and they don't have to pull all kinds of shit at their concerts because the music speaks for itself. I love how calm Mikael is between songs and how he can casually talk to the fans before launching into the next brutal death metal song.

I always find it hard to choose an Opeth song to play to someone who I am trying to convert, I always worry that if say I choose the Moor they'll get bored 'cos of the long intro, or if i choose something straight of heavy then they'll miss the prog stuff. When I heard Opeth for the first time it just clicked and I knew straight away they would become my favourite band, and make almost all other bands obsolete, but I can see how this wouldn't happen to everyone.

Yeah, I definitely know you feel. I always want to share Opeth's greatness with all my friends, and I want to send them something like "April Ethereal," but then I'm afraid they'll be turned off by the production (even though I fucking love the production). Or, I'll want to send them "Godhead's Lament," but the intro may not be accessible enough. Usually I'll just go with "The Drapery Falls" since it was the Opeth song that got be hooked, and intro is pretty much guaranteed to grab you right away.

yeah. i hate it how people who love punk/hardcore go on about how innovative/amazing one hardcore band or whatever is and then they tell you about another boring hardcore band and how much they suck.

then u compare the two and they sound totally the same - all these tiny differences within the total same genre, it amazes me :S

My wife doesn't give a damn about Opeth, despite all my propaganda. She just likes the more stereotypical song structures, the whole verse/chorus/verse thing, dislikes the satanic growling and can't tolerate the song lengths. What can you do? The love of my life would rather listen to Korn. :Puke:
Divorce her.

True, but to many people who don't like metal or cannot listen to it, they think this same way. To them it is all the same. :err:

Somone into punk music probably has ADD so their opinions on any music can't be taken seriously.

I'm guessing the person is proably 14,16 also.

I don't think Opeth is a band that you can just give to someone and expect them to immedietly dig it. If someone had given me any of the Opeth albums at anytime prior to when I discovered them I probably wouldn't have known what to do with them. Opeth is a band that you really have to discover on your own by exploring similiar music. They're pretty far down a certain musical path and I think if someone jumps ahead without laying the proper groundwork their not going to appreciate the band. If you've never heard a 10 minute song you probably won't want to. If you've never heard death vocals, they're probably going to turn you off. If you haven't listened to music from Sweden, that sad undertone is probably either going to be lost on you or turn you off from the albums. And on and on. I don't play Opeth for people that aren't already into them, if they want to its out there for them to discover on their own.

luckily ive found this chick who digs opeth, may be goin to see em with me, hows that for a date, opeth show, awwright....... but i dont see how some chick can dig opeth, but some musicians, cant, i dont get it.... its fuckin wierd
