It's hard to decide. Every track is fantastic to me on Orchid, but 2 of my top Opeth songs are on Morningrise, Black Rose Immortal and To Bid You Farewell.

Edit: After looking at my last fm, I have listened to Orchid the most, so I guess I choose Orchid.

Ontopic: MORNINGRISE!

Morningrise, clearly. It's more distinctive, more focussed. The parts/songs/riffs are more distinguishable. Orchid is quite raw and a bit meandering.

Impossible to say. Both are masterworks.
Morningrise repeats the riffs a bit too much, but it possibly has a bit stronger atmosphere. The playing of the band on Orchid isn't quite as tight as on Morningrise. The riffs on Orchid are a bit worse, but the solos are better (except the solo on TBYF which is the best). The production on Orchid is clearly better, but I can stand the Morningrise production also well. Mike's vocals are more raw and more emotional on O, but not so technical as on M, (of course they aren't technical at all on that album either, but still a bit more.) Maybe I prefer Orchid a bit after all.

"We recorded Orchid in 1994 with Johan as a session bassplayer. He eventually became a full- time member. "

That's from the official site. It is also known the Anders Nordin wrote and played the track "Silhouette" on the Orchid album. Therefore we can safely assume that he played the keys on both of those records in the studio. Per Wiberg didn't show up until years later.
