I just started listening to Porcupine Tree and I have to say this is one of the best songs I've ever heard. It has such an interesting tonality and vibe. Also, +1 to Steven Wilson for mentioning zombies in it.

However, it seems to me that a lot of PT's stuff is hit or miss. This was the only song on "Fear of a Blank Planet" that stood out to me. Perhaps it needs to grow on me after more listens, though. The only other albums I've heard are Nil Recurring and Lightbulb Sun, and I love Normal and Russia On Ice. Great tunes.

Can anyone recommend other PT albums or songs similar to those above? I'd love to explore their back catalog.

In Absentia, lots of very strong songs on there. Actually, it's extremely difficult to name a favourite song off of there.

well I liked way out here and my ashes. I've only heard this album and deadwing though so I'm not really experienced with PT

Give FOABP more time, trust me, it'll grow on you! And yes, Anesthetize fucking owns! (Especially the 5.1 mix!)

In Absentia would probably be the overall consensus favorite PT record, myself included, but Deadwing is also phenomenal, and if you're looking for a slightly different side to PT, check out Stupid Dream and The Sky Moves Sideways, both winners.

The one song you've just gotta hear cranked is "Arriving Somewhere (but not Here)" off of Deadwing. God-like! Or, you could just buy the live DVD "Arriving Somewhere", which will definitely make a believer out of you!

Enjoy!

They're kind of hit or miss with me too. I would say at least check out "Arriving Somewhere" from Deadwing if you haven't already. I have not heard anything pre-In Absentia so I can't speak for the quality of those older albums. I keep hearing that The Sky Moves Sideways is fantastic though.

Way Out Of Here, off that album owns too.
Give FOABP some more listens as roadking suggested it certainly will grow on you.

Usually, PT are a lot more hit than they are miss with me. At least, they were, until Fear Of A Blank Planet was released, which was one giant miss for me. I've got quite a few albums of theirs, but probably In Absentia and Coma Divine are my favorites, though Stupid Dream and Lightbulb Sun rock my socks as well. Basically, I really like every album of theirs from SD up til Deadwing (including).

EDIT: For the record, I bought FOABP when it was released, gave it time, and still don't like it at all.

If you preferred Lightbulb Sun, check out Stupid Dream first. If you prefer their newer stuff check out Deadwing and perhaps In Absentia. Then again, all of their albums are pure gold. Especially Stupid Dream and In Absentia. Deadwing is slightly metal influenced. The stuff pre-SD is a bit more psychedelic but it's still PT :) Up the Downstair is particularly good...

I became a PT fan rather late, so the first album I heard was In Absentia, so that might be a good album to check out if you're just getting into them.
I also remember thinking that their back catalogue was a bit weird, after hearing In Absentia and Deadwing, but trust me, their old stuff is also very good, if not the exact same style.

Other people have pretty much suggested the best...In absentia, Deadwing, Stupid Dream, Lightbulb sun etc...all good albums :)

As for songs, if you like Anesthetize, you might want to check songs like Blackest eyes, The sound of muzak, So-called friend, Wedding nails, Trains, Deadwing, Open car (live version with some extra riffs), and ofc Arriving somewhere (but not here) like mentioned above...

So... what about Tarquin's Seaweed Farm? Anyone heard that one? It's even subtitled "Words from a Hessian Sack". Hmmm... where have I heard the word "hessian" before? Coincidence?

The lyrics on FOABP are fucking atrocious. Some of SW's worst lyrics by far.
Check out The Sky Moves Sideways and Voyage 34.

Worst lyrics? I disagree, Lightbulb Sun has my favourite lyrics, but after that album FOABP is probably my favourite lyricwise.

anyway on topic: If you like that kind of songwriting strictly, then there is probably not much to search for in PT, i personally think it's one of their bottom half tracks.

Agreed, though his lyrics have usually been pretty bad (Feel So Low anyone?). Anesthetize is an awesome song but I think the last 3rd of it doesn't really fit with the first 2/3 of it, it should have been split into its own track. FOABP is very good, I think In Absentia, Recordings and Lightbulb Sun are about tied. Deadwing never really "clicked" with me but "Arriving Somewhere but Not Here" is right up there with Anesthetize in terms of awesome epics.
