Primordial - To the Nameless Dead [official thread, wit

Yes, too much repetition. And they went more for a melancholy feeling, losing that epic, triumphant vibe that StEA had in spades. Journeys End had a perfect blend of sadness and power. Storm Before Calm was pure rage. A good thing.

I like some of the songs, but it all blends together after a while on TGW. Not their finest by any stretch. AJE and StEA are unbeatable.

Perfectly assessed.

I spun TGE several times in the past couple days and each time it came and went like a blip. Surprising since it's almost an hour long. Once you entirely grasp the scope which is AJE, going back to TGE is like riding the tea cups at Disneyland 20 minutes after skydiving. Graven Idol, Dark Song, Autumn's Ablaze may be the greatest opening trifecta in the history of metal. Absolutely stunning!

Comparing doesn't make sense, or the comparisons here aren't being properly articulated. You people are making it sound like TGW is not a good album, which is wildly incorrect. It's a phenomenal release regardless of where it sits in their catalog, no? I'm also not sure if I understand how something like "The Coffin Ships" can be belittled when some of usl witnessed that as one of the highlights of HC 1 and quite possibly any live performance [I've] ever seen.

Forget rating Primordial against a CD in your kitchen stereo. Go see them live and tell me the songs from TGW don't leave you floored. :kickass:

Saying TGE is the weakest album in Primordial's catalogue, is like saying the busty blonde with the freckle on her nose is the ugliest gal in Hugh Hefner's harem. It's far from an insult my friend.

yeah yeah, that's not how it reads. :tickled:

"too much repetition...they lost their epic vibe....all blends together..."

and

"I spun TGW several times in the past couple days and each time it came and went like a blip"

These are hardly favorable comments. :loco:

I'm sure TGW is a good album, and I'm sure "The Coffin Ships" would be awesome to see live, but then, I'm sure any Primordial song would be awesome to see live. For me, it's just a matter of too much music and not enough time. Particularly with a band like Primordial, I like to be able to have a long, loving relationship with their albums. If I try to listen to everything everyone puts out, that spreads me too thinly, and it all just becomes a long sequence of one-night stands. And that's not the kind of guy I am. So some poor maiden usually has to get the cold shoulder from me in order that her sisters can benefit, and in Primordial's case, it was TGW. It seems she's recovered fine from that blow, however, and has found plenty of lovin' from other quarters, so I don't feel so bad for her anymore.

Every Primordial release is essential in their own way, even the Burning Season EP, but none is "perfect", which is what makes them fit for discussion. However I would not compare Primordial album between them either. I'd say there is one best Primordial album for each occasion/mood. If you want your scrotum pulverized by a train, put on "SBC", if you want a constant trickle of epic sweat down your spine spin "StEA", if you're in for some shoegaze go for "TGW". On the whole my favourite is "Journey's End". Maybe it's their most consistant I dunno, more likely I discovered the band back in 1998 and it just humbled me like none of their stuff since then.

There's not actually that many Primordial albums, and for me at least, they tend to take priority over other bands.

A couple of years ago I came to realize that approx 92.17% of "heavy metal" is utter tripe so I should just ignore it altogether and focus on the best of the best.

(I actually went on a quick $300 spending spree earlier this year when I realized just how many '6-7/10' type crappy albums I own compared to how many '9-10/10' "masterpieces" were still missing from my collection.) :loco:

Actually, I really like TGW in certain moods. Other moods I'm Spiriting the Earth Aflame. Watched some primordial live stuff on youtube, and now I really gotta get down to ragnarok to see them live.

To the nameless dead reminds me of Spirit the Earth Aflame in its construction and overall feeling with a slice of The Gathering Wilderness for the more mature songwriting.

All in all, it's another solid album without being a masterpiece. This title is tied between AJA and STEA.
